10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, September 15, 1904 CIVIL SERVICE PLAYOFFS ESPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' FOR THE RECORD! -- Just to at least get one fact established, the statement which appeared in this paper's "Good Evening" column, in Saturday's issue--quote--'Com- mitteeman George Campbell asked for a 3,000-seat, $170,000 4 at Alexandra Park with playfield lights" -- was entirely a misrepresentation. The sentence was part of an [ ation concerning the operations of Oshawa's appointed Centenniat, Committee, We would like to make it positively clear that we did not ask for such a project and for the in- formation concerned, no 'member of the committee is permitted to "ask" for any project, a ruling established early in session, back\in May, As a matter of fact, the project of a grandstand was suggested by an Oshawa citizen, back about that time and along with a total of over 30 suggestions, some almost identical and several of them similar, is now being given consideration, following investigation, by the Centennial Committee. Come to think of it, since the insur- ance money from the Alexandra Park grandstand, when destroyed by fire, found its way in the city "pot" and out of that same pot came, the money to build the new swimming pool at Rotary Park -- it would be almost practical and economical, if the city ended up with both a swimming pool and a grandstand at no great cost, Could this be a chance for "Paul" to pay back 'Peter'? Meanwhile, as that I'V detective used to say -- 'Just the facts, M'am, just the facts!" xXxXxXX*xX OSHAWA MINOR Softball Assoc. players, of this and former years, will learn with deep regret today of the pass- ing of young '"'Mike" Gillies, popular son of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Gillies. For several years, in PeeWee and Bantam ranks, Mike was a star pitcher and left-handed first base- man for Connaught Park softball teams and helped in win- ning championship honors. He was also, until stricken with cancer, more than a year ago, a promising member of the Junior section of the Oshawa Tennis Club. A good competi- tor and fine young sportsman, Mike was popular not only with his numerous teammates at Conaught Park but also with his rivals, from the various other Neighborhood Assoc. teams in the city. On behalf of the Oshawa Minor Softball Association's executive and all the boys who knew and played with or against him in OMSA ranks, we extend deep- est sympathy to the bereaved family. XXXXX GREEN GAELS won the opening game of The Minto Cup finals, last'night in New Westminster, At the time of writing this column we didn't have the details, except that Oshawa had held @ good lead at half-time and then had to break a 12-12 deadlock, late in the final period, to emerge winners at 15-13, . .. KEEPING IN STEP, in the bid to have both Cana- dian lacrosse championship trophies resting in these parts for a year, Brooklin topped Vancouver 10-8 last night in the Mann Cup opener at Whitby Arena, in a real sizzler, with Brooklin's speed amazing the Westerners. XXXXxX DIAMOND DUST: -- Wood's "Policemen" won their Civil Service League semi-final series over Rundle's 'Fire- men" last night, taking their third win in the fourth game of the set. In the other bracket, Thompson's tied it up with Scott's and they'll settle it tomorrow night at Alexandra Park, eight o'clock. . . .BAD BOYS play their City and Dis- trict semi-final round game, second of set, in Brooklin to- aight and if Brooklin wins, they'll settle it back here on Thursday night. .. . OASA PLAYOFF action here at Alex- andra Park tonight calls for Beamsville meeting Hastings, in Junior "C" third-game action. It's expected that on Thursday evening, North York and Cobourg will play the third game of their Bantam semi-inal series, here at Alexan- dra Park, five o'clock. . .OSHAWA MINOR teams, Kiwanis Bantam finals and Midget Round-Robin teams, are reminded that starting tomorrow, their playoff games are scheduled to start at six o'clock sharp -- because it's getting dark much earlier now. The Civil Service Softball League playoff doubleheader, at Alexandra Park Jast night, saw the league championship move one step closer to completion, when Wood's Transport "Police- men" defeated Rundle Garden Centre "Firemen" 7-4, in the fourth game of their semi-final series, fo win the set. three games to one and so qualify for a berth in the finals. y The league championship finals however, will not open until next Monday night, be- cause in the other semi-final Wood's Oust Rundles; Thompson's Tie Series | Nipigon Midgets Nip Rundle Lads -- SPORTS. CALENDAR Carl Earle, on the mound for on's, came up with a winning performance when he was tagged for six hits but kept them scattered to never more than one safety in any one in- ning, and so limited Scott's to just two runs, At that, Scott's took the lead, when Ken Bradley homered in the first inning, with two out, to put his team in front 1-0. However, Scott's collected only one more run, a homer by. Cos- burn, to open the fourth inning. Doubles by Salter and Petitclere and singles by Butler and Rundle's got to Masiewich finally, in the fourth inning and cashed in three runs. Greentr singled 'and went all the way when the ball was bobbled in the outfield. G. Hooper then singled and Button homered, to make the score 5-3, Greentree tripled in the fifth, with two out, but was left stranded, The losers got their final run in the 7th when Knock- er connected with one out and then with two out, scored on| Greentree's second triple and third hit of the game. Masie- bracket, Thompson's Plumbing defeated Scott's Chicken Villa, in the second game of iast night's doubleheader, 10-2, to even this series at one win apiece. Third and deciding game of tomorrow (Wednesday) night at Alexandra Park, at 8,00 p.m. MAKE HITS COUNT Wood's. Transport defeated Rundle's . Garden Centre by making their hits count. Their big rally was a four-run splurge in the d stanza, all Ward's Take Series Over Maverick's Ward's Billiards moved into the UAW Softball League cham- pionship finals, against Scugog Cleaners, when they swept their semi-final series over Maver- icks, in two-straight games on Saturday, at Lakeview Park. Ward's defeated Mavericks 6-1 in the first game and came back in the second half of the) doubleheader with a 3-0 shut-| out, to wind up the series. Maxwell pitched the win for the Billiardmen in the first game, He blanked Mavericks for three frames and then --in the fourth inning, Boivin click- ed, so did Hall. Campbell got on and Phillips hit, but Hall was nipped at the plate and Maxwell fanned the next two batters to limit Mavericks to just one run, Hill and Campbell hit safely in the sixth also but again were left stranded. Max- well had nine strikeouts, in earning his win. Phillips, pitching for Maver- icks, got into trouble in the very first inning. Vernon singled with one out then Solomon doubled.. Hodgson got on and then with two out, Knox doubled and Norris singled to complete the three-run rally. Doubles by Maxwell and Ver- non, plus a wild pitch, meant two more runs for the winners in the second and Bryan's single was turned into a run on hits by Knox and Coverly, in the third, to make it 6-0, Phil- lips found the fange after that and Ward's never scored again, but they already had enough. SHUTOUT FOR MENZIES | Menzies, pitching the second game, scored the 3-0 shutout win for Ward's Billiards, allow- ing Mavericks only two singles, one by Denault in the fourth inning and the other by Hall, in the sixth frame. He struck out 11 batters. Phillips was again the pitcher for Mavericks.
