Amherst, N.S., around 1910." (CP)) As a result of the efforts of a group of volunteers, long-term! mental patients have been able to spend a family-style week at @ cottage near here. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brook started the project. Mrs. Brook is chairman of the Peterbor- ough volunteer visiting commit-| tee of the Mental Health Asso- ciation. Because of her. work, | both she and her husband know | many of the patients at the On- tario Hospital in Kingston. ' | Mrs. Brook also has first-| hand knowledge of how it feels! to be a patient in an Ontario hospital. Some years ago she . epent three weeks in One. "'It's a startling experience that no one can know until they go be- hind the door and hear the key, turn." | The cottage holiday was Mr.| Brooks' idea. Mis wife got the) approval of hospital superin-| tendent Dr. J. S. Pratten, and began organizing. } A four-bedroom cottage was/| loaned to them. Volunteers got) it ready, took bedding, dishes) and food there. The freezer was) filled with home-made baking, | the Northminster United Church | Women donated over $100 worth of groceries and soft drinks. A neighbor of the Brooks loaned a boat and motor, and bathing suits and cottage clothes were collected Theatre passes were provided and Mrs. Brook took her guests to band concerts and to church. On Friday she had a pot luck supper, inviting guests from the volunteer group and the Mental Health Association, ENJOYED BY ALL } "It was this contact with us and other people that did so much for them," Mrs. Brook says. "I don't want to drop it} now, in spite of the work and the expense." The patients who went on the holidays were chosen by the hospital staff, with permission from their families. One group of five went for the first week, another for the second. Mrs. Brook and one other volunteer each week did the} housework, with some help from the guests. The Brook's two young sons were at the cot- tage, which Mrs, Brook says helped. 'Children don't see any difference." The Brooks have had a letter from the hospital, telling them. "It will be wonderful if this can be repeated in the future. Ev- eryone seems to have enjoyed this and to have benefited." Mrs. Brook says she would organize another group this| summer, if she could get an-! other cottage. She dreams of ex-| panding in the future. "Then I would hire help or perhaps get help from the hospital so that I would have more time to be with the guests ' "T have long term dreams about this, but in the meantime "Y'm hoping what we've done can be repeated. It is something for them to remember in the long) winter. And it would have been' so much better if the time had been longer."
