By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' TWO CHAMPIONSHIPS! When you get this close to October, you really should expect the "softball season" to be about over. Well, last night, they cleaned up two "local" Oshawa championships. In the Oshawa Minor Softball Asso- ciation, Kiwanis Bantam League, the Storie Park Bantams nosed out Sunnyside Park 8-7 in their fifth and deciding game, to cop the season's honors. In our opinion, we: think Sunny- side Park boys proved, over the summer season, that they had the best team in the league -- but they lost out in the playoffs. They gave it a fine try in the finals, took the series to the fifth and final game and had the tying run on $rd base, when the season ended. Storie Park boys earned their win, they pulled off a couple of snappy double-plays at crucial spots, but smarter base-runing and more alert play could have saved the day for Sunnyside Park. ' THOMPSON'S PLUMBING won the Civil Service League championship Jast night at Alexandra Park, wining their third and deciding game, over Wood's Transport, in convincing style, The, Civil Service League has this season enjoyed its best season of all time. They have had splendid competition, excellent playoff games and a whiz-bang playoff finish. Today they rate as one of the best-balanced, most competitive lea- gues in the city. We hope they keep it that way. This is one league that has 'played for fun" -- and that's exactly what they have had -- they've had fun! Winning has. been im- portant -- but not too important! Losing has been regret- ted -- but not considered fatal. They've got the right idea and as long as they continue to operate their league on this give-and-take basis, they are assured of success, Any team can "pack" and clinch the penant -- but if they do -- who do they play with next year? These chaps have 'fun' -- and at their age bracket and ability status -- that's all they can expect. But if that is their target -- and they make it -- who can fault them? Every team in this league had a good sea- son -- they all had a lot of fun -- and so, it's somebody else's turn to be "Champion" but that isn't fatal to the rest-- they, too, had a good season. Carry on, boys -- you may not realize it -- but you are enjoying softball, just the way it was meant to be enjoyed by everybody ! x x x x NEAR THE END: -- The summer season is closing. Tonight, at Alexandra Park, 8:00 o'clock, it's Scugog Clean- ers vs Bad Boys, in the 3rd game of their 3-out-of-5 'City Championship" series and a win for the Junior Scugogs will wind it up. If Bad Boys win tonight, the fourth game is scheduled for Thursday night. . . . TOMORROW NIGHT, at 5:30 o'clock, Connaught Tigers open the Midget League finals against Storie Park, at Storie Park diamond. The second game has been scheduled for Connaught Park diamond, Sun- day afternoon, at 3:00 p.m. and the third game is at Alexan- dra Park on Monday night, at 6:30 p.m. -- (to be finished under floodlights). The fourth and fifth games (if necessary) will also be played at Alexandra Park... . OSHAWA TONY'S are scheduled to play their return OASA Senior "A" OASA playoff game against St. Thomas, up there tomorrow night. . . BROOKLIN CONCRETES open their OASA Southern Ontario finals, against Elmvale, in Intermediate "'C" play, tomorrow (Wednesday) night, in Brooklin at eight o'clock, with the return game back in Elmvale on Saturday, AND THAT, if you have kept track, takes care of the "local" summer sports activity. | MOHAWK RACEWAY RESULTS | PIRST RACE -- | Mile pace for 2year-|+Lady G, Pacey ods.
