| MEER LL METIS ATRL I Rte aprgaRees: 1Q THE OSHAWA TIMES, Twesdey, October 27, 1994 10-PIN ACTION SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' As a result of Thursday night's OSHAWA GENERALS clash with the Kitchener Rangers, at Bowmanville Arena tonight and it will be the first meeting of the season for these two clubs. Last Sunday, the Kitchener squad whipped Hamilton Red Wings 8-3 and in so doing, served notice to the rest of the OHA Junior "A" league that the honeymoon was over, ot least as far as the Kitchener club was concerned. Up until this point, the Rangers were being gazed down upon as the lowly entry of the league and No. 1 in the voting for "most likely club to finish in last place", But all that has been changed in the past couple of weeks. Over the weekend, Lou Passador was replaced as coach of the Rangers -- to spend more time as coach for the New York Rangers. Floyd "Butch" Martin was named as his replacement. Needless to say, the new coach, Martin, will be going all- out tonight for a win over the Generals in Bowmanville. Also needless to say -- he'll have his troubles! Even though the Generals will be without the services of their ace centre, Ron Buchanan, they'll still be out to prove tonight that they can win games without him -- especially on their home ice, It could be that tomght some of the lesser lights of the Gen- erals will come into stardom. Bill Little grabbed off the spot- light on Sunday afternoon and with Buchanan on the side- lines, some of the other forwards will have to pick up the slack -- and in doing so, we could have some new stars to- night. Certainly, we expect the Generals to maintain their undefeated streak and climb just another notch closer to the league-leading Niagara Falls Flyers. x x x x x THE NHL RACE is mighty close at this point but at this season of the year, most sports fans are content to sidetrack their hockey interest, in favor of a good look at what the Canadian football teams are doing. With this in mind, we have to go along with the trend -- Hamilton Tiger-Cats whip- ped Toronto Argos on Saturday and that settled a couple of mute points. Hamilton is sure of first place in the Eastern Gircuit and Argos are sure of fourth place -- that's the bot- '¢om of the heap, with no hope of a playoff berth. Ottawa 'was the victim of a go-for-broke pass as Alouettes won their game on Sunday afternoon. Defeat didn't kick Ottawa out of gecond place but the win for Montreal at least proved that they were entitled to third place. They didn't slide in by the back door. Argos are left with nothing to brag about except their season's ticket sale. Maybe it's about time the fans who pay the freight decided to take a hard look at the situa- tion and decide whether coach Knobby Workowski should go-- or somebody else. One thing is certain, Argos will not sell as many season tickets next term unless they come up with something better than their usual July splash--about having the Grey Cup all wrapped up -- before they've played against anybody. At this distance, the only thing we can visualize action only three points sepa- rates the top four teams in the Eastway Men's Thurs-Nite League. Fuels and Dyetis Sports took advantage of a head- to-head match between Mackies Van and Storage and Ideal Dairy, who split their points, to move into serious contention for the league lead. If the Grey Cup isn't held in Toronto that year -- and even if it is -- and Argos do not represent the East -- then a lot of fans are going to feel they invested a lot of money in a long-plan program that blew up in their faces.
