Old and new friends gathered with the members, some travelling from afar, to worship together and give thanks. The guest speaker for . this happy occasion was the Rev. G. H. Moore, of St. Andrew's- Chalmers Presbyterian Church, of Uxbridge. Mrs. Jan Drygala; of Oshawa, was the guest solo-| 7 ist. Sometime in the year 1844, a| | young minister, Rev, Robert Monteith, was serving a parish| f of the United Presbyterian Church at Greenlaw, Scotland. A ¢all went out for missionaries to serve the needs of Canada.|{ Mr. Monteith answered the call, and with two others, came to Canada the same year. He|j spent about two years -going| about the country organizing! congregations in the newer dis-! tricts, part of the time in com- pany with Dr. Robert Thorn- ton, of Oshawa. CONGREGATION FORMED In the course of this work, he) reached Prince Albert where! § lived a few scattered Presby-| terians. These he formed into al congregation in the fall of 1855,) and the following spring, 24) members and 15 adherents for-| mally petitioned the United) § Presbyterian Church of Scot-|\i land to be admitted as a con-| § gregation, with Mr. Monteith as| @ the minister. The prayer of their) petition was granted, and - so! f was laid the foundation of what} is now. St. John's Presbyterian|§ Church of Port Perry. Mr. Monteith remained as/ minister for eight years. For the first two years he supplied as well the new congregation) @ at Uxbridge (no record exists) § to show if he formed this con-| gregation) driving there Satur-| day afternoon and visiting the people, preaching there Sunday morning, and returning to) Prince Albert in time to super- intend the Sunday School, teach the Bible Class and preach in the afternoon. No choir or organ existed dur-| § ing Mr. Monteith's. ministry. The service of praise was led) by a Precentor, T. C. Forman||) who served as treasurer of the/ church for more than 40 years,| He was also one of the first el- ders and was the first clerk of| the session. USED METHODIST BUILDING © The first congregation wor-|) shipped in the building of the), Methodists at Prince Albert. When the first Presbyterian| Church building was erected is)) uncertain from the scant rec-)) ords available. It is certain, however, that the present) church was erected in 1870. Ac- | cording to The Toronto Mail of} . Oct. 2, 1886, the church was! then known as Burns' Presby- terian Church -- and no record) can be found of when and why the name, was changed. The original: building is still serving) the needs of the present con-) gregation. In the year 1942 the intérior| of the entire church was renov- ated and stained glass windows replaced the "frosted glass". In 1956 the chancel was com- pletely remodelled and the pipe organ replaced by an elec-/ tronic organ, Last year the » low-| er hall was rebuilt and a* new heating system installed for the whole building. This year the| master plan, envisaged for the) Sanctuary some years ago, was| fulfilled with the laying of the| new floor and the installation of} new pews. In addition, the walls), and ceiling of the sanctuary| were redecorated and a new) carpet laid. ' For the past several years) Rey. H. M. Buntain, formerly} on the Eastern, Coast, has' served as minister of St. John's, Presbyterian Church, Port Per-| ry.
