They are citizens of Oshawa: your neighbours, sons and daughters, wives or husbands. They include bakers and cooks, general workers, laboratory assistants, orderlies, prac- a storekeepers, maintenance workers and others. Their total number is about i HOW ARE THEY TREATED? Three quarters of them are paid $1 an hour for a 40-hour week. This is only since the $1 minimum was imposed by law last May. Up to May this year they received the fabulous salary of 67 and 74 cents an hour. Would you not be economically sick if you. had to live on such a salary in a high cost area like Oshawa ? The Hospital is offering a remedy of 3% per year for the next 3 years. This would bring the total salary to $1.09 in three years from now -- a remedy that would not even begin to effect a cure. WHAT DO THE EMPLOYEES WANT? @ They want a 13-cent increase this year plus 12 cents next year for e 2-year agree- ment, or 15 cents if the contract is for one year. @ They want senority based on continuous service, providing. job security In case of HERE ARE THE 3 REMEDIES J see oe eoe ee ee sero eeoreereeroneee in Christ Jesus; we only gain|Timothy as He has guarded eternal is to save men. |faith, but Timothy has little to 8:00: A.M. = othy cli i death and bi t life and im-|othy closes with a reca' of CHURCH SCHOOLS In a sentence already packed |Paul. They have been negotiating with the Board of Oshawa General Hospital since April. Re- cently, after long delays caused mainly by the Employer and after making many conces- sions during bargaining, the Employees reached a point where there was nothing left for them to give. The dispute was referred to a conciliation board, which means that negotia- tions are continuing with the assistance of a third party. Your Hospital Employees feel that they are performing a worthwhile service. They are dedicated people. However, they also want to be able to support their families and te cope with the cost of living in this community. It means that Oshawa General Hospital is not using the grants It recelves as a Class A hospital to pay its employees the way it should. By so doing it violates a principle of the Ontario Hospital Services Com- mission -- the principle of wages comparable to those paid in a given - community. In Oshawa, where the average salary is $115 per week, it means that your Hospital Employees have only 34 cents in their pay envelopes when the aver- age Oshawa worker receives $1.00. In other words, they are short of 66 cents in the dollar to face the same cost of living. This has been a chronic disease with them for years. It remains a disease affecting more than 70% of them. © FAIR SICK LEAVE CREDITS © JOB SECUR; SENIORITY.
