A statement of claim for Mrs. Ethel Marie O'Connor, widow of Joseph Michae] O'Connor, was filed Thursday by her solicitor, Morri Kamin, at the Essex County courthouse. Mr. O'Connor, who was un- dergoing an eye operation, died about four hours after the blast. The governing council of the Salvation Army operates the hospital. Dr. McKenzie, an oph- thalmolegist, Dr. Winemaker, an anaesthetist and Dr. Boley, an eye surgeon, took part in the operation which had been under way about half an hour before the blast. A coroner's jury later held no one was to blame. Death was attributed to an internal hem- orrhage after a spark from a diathermy machine used in the operation ignited cyclopropane gas used as an anaesthetic. FAMOUS CHURCH Wren's church, St. Mary-le- Bow in London, has a 222-foot steeple topped by a nine-foot By JOSEPH MacSWEEN LONDON (CP)--Col. George Edward Cecil Wigg, 63, the man who blew the whistle on former War Minister John Pro- fumo, is paymaster - general in Harold Wilson's new Labor gov- ernment. The sad-faced Wigg, a one- man opposition intelligence unit on army matters for 13 years, electrified the Hoyse of Com- mons March 21, 1963, with the} first question on what was des- tined to become the Profumo affair. That question had a sensa- tional outcome but Prime Min- ister Wilson knows well the dogged persistence of Wigg as a sleuth on more mundane mili- tary matters through the years. Thus in his new job Wigg will not really be a paymaster, He is described as a sort of per- sonal watchdog and early-warn- ing system for Wilson over a aed field, including security. "Mr. Wigg holds the record for sniffing out trouble more quickly than anybody else in Parliament," says The even- ing Standard. "Mr. Wigg will 'be a useful man to have inside the government--if only to en- sure that he is not twisting its tail himself." SECURITY CONSCIOUS Although the home office con- tinues to have responsibility for general security questions, Wigg's duty will be to look into anything serious that arises. He is particularly sensitive about security involving his abiding love, the army. Wgg had doubts about Pro- fumo 'ong before he heard that the Tory minister had an affair with call-girl Christine Keeler. But he was particularly con- cerned over reports that Miss Keeler's favors also were shared by a Soviet diplomat, raising a question of security danger. He let air into the whole thing by asking Home Secre- tary Henry Brooke to answer rumors involving a '"'figure on the government front bench," prompting Profumo to make a dragon. | Watchdog Role For Man Who Set Off Profumo Affair mons, denying any impropriety with Miss Keeler. Profumo la- ter retracted and resigned in disgrace, causing a ruckus that rocked the Conservative gov- ernment. ' Wigg, who calls all men "mate," served 18 years in the regular army before 1937, re- turned to it in the Second World War and later served as parlia- mentary secretary to War Min- ister Emanuel Shinwell in the post-war Labor government. When the Tories came to power in 1951, Wigg retained in- formal lines of army informa- tion as he moved to the Opposi- tion benches. He kept track of various army units, for in- stance, by. getting base and garris : a; newspapers and checking who played whom in football poor other. sports.
