MOLNER, MD. Dear Dr. Molner: My hus- band had diabetes in advanced form. The doctor told me our daughter inherited a tendency to the disease. She is now nine years-old and has a craving for sweets and butter. Does this mean anything? Are there any precautions I should take? I have tried to get her to use artificial sweeteners and to keep candy away from her, but if I am not looking she puts two or three spoons of sugar in a cup of tea. If I make a batch of candy she eats it as fast as she can. Should she have regular medical checkups or am I being overly worried?-- Mrs. R. L.A, Diabetes is highly dependent von heredity. Since the Amer- an Diabetes Association be- gan its drives to detect the dis- ease, its frequency has risen Due To Heredity Be from two per cent to nearly five per cent. One hospital re- cently examined all patients for diabetes and found six per cent with it. Diabetics these days are re- ceiving treatment and hence growing up and having chil- dren, so the disease is more common now. If both parents have diabetes, all children are likely to de- velop it. If one parent is diabetic, and the other isn't--but is a carrier of the trait, inherited from an earlier generation -- there is about a 50-50 chance of a child being diabetic. If one parent is diabetic and the other is not even a carrier, there is about a 25 per cent chance that among four _chil- dren one will have diabetes, two will be carriers, and one will be free of the trait. that the hand was a washout. The craving for fats and sweets is not particularly signi- fieant, It is true of many chil- dren. Just the same, she should limit her consumption of them, Most particularly, don't let her become fat or overweight. Why make candy? It just puts temp- tation in her way. Teach her Sensible eating habits. Under the circumstances, don't let fear of diabetes be- come an obsession. Don't make these tests in the morning, when sugar levels will be low anyway. Rather, they are most useful when made about two hours after a meal. That is when the blood sugar will be most significantly ele- vated in early cases. Diabetes, in childhood, can develop swiftiy--much more so than with adults.
