JAY BECKER (Top record-holder in Masters' Individuel Championship Play) QUIZ You are South, both sides vile nerable. The bi has -been:- t th oun wear case, at the when you re-, sponded with a heart, of making a game looked dim. In fact, there should have been some doubt in your mind about the advisability of re- seeming to the diamond bid at all. However, once you and partner jumps to hearts, the picture changes drastically. The weak-looking heart suit has much greater value as soon as North fills it out by jump-raising the suit. All suits are now at least mod- erately under control, and the prospects of making ten, or even eleven, tricks are very good. 2. Four notrump. The number of tricks that can be made de- pends on how many aces part, tner has. The Blackwood con- vention is therefore invoked. If North responds five hearts, showing two aces, we pass. If he responds five spades, show- ing three aces, we bid six hearts, If he responds five clubs, which in this sequence would show all four aces, we bid sev- en hearts. Partner's point count is not the criterion with hands of this type. Once partner guarantees four-card trump support by jumping to three hearts, the number of aces he has will de- termine how many tricks can be made. 3. Pass. Our hand has not changed much in value beyond the original prospect it offered It should be remembered that the jump raise is not forcing but merely a request that we continue on to game. If North's hand were such that he could be sure of making ten tricks opposite a normal heart res- ponse, he would. presumably have bid four hearts, not three. Apparently, North needed more than a minimum heart re- sponse before undertaking a game. We didn't have that little extra he seems to be concerned about. The best thing to do is pass, It is of course possible that ten tricks will be made, but the odds are against bidding the game, 4, Three spades. Games in hearts is of course certain, but the possibility of a slam should be 'investigated. North may have some such has as: Spades 4, Hearts A872, Dia- monds AQ863; Clubs AJ5 -- which is not an extraordinary hand, but still good enough for a sound slam contract.
