JAY BECKER (Tep record-holder in Mesters® Opening lead -- ten of dia- monds, 4 Let's say you're declarer at six hearts and West leads a dia» mond. You can count eleven sure tricks and the problem is to find the best way of acquiring a twelfth. How far your goes in this matter depends on how much experience "ve, had in such situations. you were a beginner or near-begin- ner, the only possibility that would occur to you would be to rely on a spade finesse. You might say to yourself that if East had the king the finesse would succeed and you would make the slam. This method of play offers a 50 per cent chance of making the contract. However, if you were more ad- vanced, you would realize that finesses are not the cure for all ills and that there are other, less risky, ways of accomplish- ing your purpose. You might therefore cash the A-K of clubs and ruff a club in the hope of finding the suit divided 3-3. You would plan to eventually use the ace of hearts as an entry so that you could discard two spades on the established clubs, If all went well, you would make seven. However, if it turned out that the clubs were divided 4-2, this method of play would fail and you would be forced to fall back on a spade finesse. Your chances would be distinctly bet- ter than 50 per cent, but still not as good as they would be if you adopted the following plan. Take the ten of diamonds with the ace, cash the king of hearts, and then lead a club, playing low from dummy. Win the prob- able spade return, cash the queen of hearts, play a club to the king, and ruff a low club. Then play a heart to the ace and discard your spades on the A-8 of clubs. This method of play offers the best chance in the long run, since it does the whether the clubs are di 3-3 or 4-2, a combined chance that comes to 84 per cent, CONSIDERING OAS MOVE OTTAWA (CP) -- The gov ernment still is considering whether to join the Organiza- tion of American States, Prime Minister Pearson told the Com- mons Thursday. He said in re- ply to Creditiste Leader Real Caouette that reports that Can- ada has applied for membership are without foundation in fact. The report was not identified.
