Harmac Industries Sees Bright Future WHITBY (Staff) -- With the local giant ir the industrial field closed down. many local indus- trial plants, which feed the giant with countless different items, are tightening their belts and be age crag employee lay- s. Whitby is fortunate, as only several jocal manufacturers de- pend on General Motors as their main consumer. Albert Harbottle, Harmac Ltion, lustries suid the los: eral Motors business will force his company to layoff 10 to 15 employees "very shortly". He added that however bleak the short-term outlook appears for his company, the beginning of January is looked forward to as the start of rosy days, and full employment at the plant. ADDITION ADDED Large contracts from a United States producer of 'materials- handling equipment necessitated the construction of a new 8,000 square feet addition to the com- pany's present plant. The new contracts for the manufacture of bulldozer buck- ets and syiare parts for construc- tion and material moving ma- chines ave expected to mean $200,000 in new business the first year, he said. The contract is perpetual and it is expected that the business figure for the first year will im- prove in years to come. "We have the contract to sup- one of the largest materials- handling corcerns in the world," he added ' The name of the company is not for publication until. work commences in the new plant in January. MORE EMPLOYMENT Employment for 15 to 20 new. persons is expected by the mid- die of February when the new plant swings into full produc- Mr. Harbottle said his com- pany is contemplating switching their production into 100 per cent materials-handling. "The other lines such as auto- motive are far too much in the up and down category, and with materials-handling work we will know how much has to be done, and can plan the future better." The Oshawa Pattern Company located in Whitby Township, east of the town line, does a great amount of work for Gen- eral Motors but reported little effect from the present strike. Much of the pattern work they do is ordered well in advance and patverns for the 1966 models are already underway. Other orders including con- tracts with the Ford Motor Com- pany will also help ease any effect from the strike, Gordon Coupland suid. A new order for aluminum patterns for an Ajax manufac- turer has been received by the company, he said. The aluminum patterns will ply the Canalian market for be used to produce 'styrofoam" WHITBY PERSONALS R. BATHURST CONTAINERS Joseph Buckley, plant mana- ger of Bathurst containers said the General Motors strike would affect his company but the ex- tent of thé effect will not be ap- parent for some time. He sa'd his company pro- duced a large number of boxes in all shapes and sizes for Gen- eral Motors, buf for the time be- ing the employees could con- tinue production and» the prod- ucts would be stockpiled. He added that, although Gen- eral Motors was one of the bet- ter area customers of his com- pany, other business was done in large volume all over the province OTHER INDUSTRIES All other industries reported little or no effect on company productiva and several com- mented that if anything the strike would create a better se- lection of labor on the market. McCormick Blades Limited, a new local industry, involved in the production of snow removal 'blades, and other blades used on bulldozers and road graders, reported a good seasonal busi- ness. Company employees are being kept busy with orders for blades for snow removal equipment and government tender forms for large orders are anticipated for winter business. Lofthouse Brass reported little effect from the strike as only five per vent of their business was done with General Motors. Lofthouse produces several different types of brass fittings used on brakelines. The company announced that in the earty part of the new year they would be expanding to in- clude services in the machining and tooling trades for outside customers. -|Bazaar And Tea Most Successtul WHITBY (Staff) -- In the ab- sence of President Mrs. D.
