MOLNER, MD Dear Dr. Molner: My _ two- year-old son has a lung ailment called cystic fibrosis. He has re- peated colds and very often ends up in the hospital. How serious is this disease and what precautions are nec- essary?--Mrs. I. Cystic' fibrosis is a very dif- ficult and dangerous condition with which some children are born. Other than that it is con- genital, we still can say only that the cause is unknown. It is not be ig lung ail- ment, although the lungs are affected. But so are other or- gans. It is a disorder of the mucous glands. In the lungs, a very thick, sticky mucus is produced which of course, hamper breathing, Can Be Dangerous -- plugs small bronchial passages, and accounts for a child's ex- cessive susceptibility to colds or other respiratory infections. But cystic fibrosis also af- fects the body. in other ways. The pancreas does not behave normally, digestive juices do not reach the digestive tract in proper amounts, and bulky stools result. Excessive amounts of salt are released from the sweat glands. which is a useful feature in diagnosis but is accompaniéd, ir some cases, by clogging o! small glands of the skin anc troublesome cysts. HAS NO CURE There is no cure for the dis ease, but there are extensive forts to discover more about it and we can, at least, say this: Individual Chompionship Play) K5 Sxq106: 'The bidding: North East South West INT Pass 3a Pass 4m Pass Sh Opening lead--queen of spad Two chances to make @ con- tract are obviously better than one, and it is therefore good Practice, when a contract ap. pears to be in danger by follow- ing one particular line of play, to keep in reserve a second line of play that offers an extra chance, Let's say you're declarer at five clubs and West leads the queen of spades. Obviously, you cannot relax, since there is a decided danger of losing a heart and two diamonds if West has the ace, You don't want to pin all your hopes on East's having the ace of diamonds, so you start to look for a method of play that will give you more than the 50 per cent chance of making the contract that you would have by eventually leading a diamond towards the king. One possibility is to win the spade, draw trumps, clear dum- my of spades, cash the A-K of hearts, and then play another heart. If it turns out that the hearts are divided 3-3 and West has to win the third heart, you've got the hand made. However while this method of play is better than relying ex- clusively on East's having the ace of diamonds, it is still not the best line of play. To give yourself the maximum chance of making the contract, you have to do sOmething more drastic than that. The wifining play is: to let West win the opening}Jead of the queen of spades! jis un- usual play offers the best chance of making the contract. It is better than the method men- tioned, above, because its suc- cess does not depend on West's winning the third heart lead. West can make no play at trick two that will defeat the contract. Whatever he does, you draw trumps, discard a heart on the high spade, and then es- tablish an extra heart trick by ruffing 'one of dummy's hearts. If it turns out. that the hearts ate not divided 3-3, you can always fall back on a diamond lead from dummy. SALLY'S SALLIES CROSSWORD A CROSS "m Stmians 1, Booty 5. Goda #° Places lar9 The outlook for children with CF is much better today than it was 20 or 10 or five years ago. Many used to die in infancy from what appeared to be meumonia. Others were weak because they could not digest heir food effectively. Today, with more rapid diag- osis of the disease, such ba- es and children (and som ow grow to adulthood) can be given more effective treatment. Aerosol inhalation and other methods loosen the heavy mu- cus in the lungs. Use of anti- biotics at the slightest sign o infection combats that hazard Low-fat diet and giving of pan creatic material helps diges tion. Once science. can lear enough about the mucous gland and how they behave, it me ye possible to do someth about the basic problem of cys tic fibrosis.
