'DICK' McLAUGHLIN "Dick" McLaughlin Big Name In Sport which he became interested in An imterest in ekating is E. R. S. 'Dick' McLaughlin Is one of "the key men" behind the construction of Oshawa's new Civic Auditorium. His imterest in the establish- ment of an arena in the city is logical when his athletic inter- ests and accomplishments are appraised. Mr. McLaughlin was well known as 4a figure skater in Canada and is currently an in- ternational skating judge, Mr. McLaughlin is a life-long resident of Oshawa and was educated here. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science de- gree from the University of Toronto in 1948. He began work as an engi- neer with General Motors of Canada Ltd., In 1948 and now is the assistant chief engineer. In 1958 Mayor Lyman Gifford called a meeting of citizens im- terested in the construction of a new arena in the city. Mr. Mc- Laughlin was elected tempo- rary chairman of the commit- tee. a position which he has held since. Since then he has steered the committee through the man- oeuvres which led to the financ- ing campaign and eventually to the opening of the great new Civic Auditorium. He was 2 member of the Oshawa Skating Club from its inception and performed in many Oshawa and district skat- ing shows. The Canadian Jun- ior Skating Championship was won by him im 1945 shortly after judging. The figure skating sport first attracted him in 1939. Mr. Mc- Laughlin won the Canadian Pairs Championship with Marnie Brerton of Toronto and went on to take the Canadian waltzing and ten-step competitions. CHAMPIONSHIP PANEL His interest was noted and in 1951 he was appointed to the Canadian Championship panel, and in the same year he judged the Canadian Championships at Ottawa. Mr, McLaughlin's experience as a skating judge was widened when he was appointed as a World Skating judge in 1958. In that capacity he attended the World's Figure Skating Cham- pionships at Cortina D'Ampezzo in. Northern Italy in February last year, he Canadian Figure Skating Association elected him to the president's postin 1958, and again in 1959. Mr. McLaughlin was also the president of the Oshawa Skating Club from 1949 until 1952. DONATE $1,000 A 76-year-old North Oshawa resident donated $1,000 to the Civic Auditorium campaign be- cause: "The building will pro- vide a place for kids to play and watch hockey." In 1950 Mr. McLaughlin married the former Patricia Earl, of Toronto. Mrs. McLaugh- lin was the runner-up in the Canadian Ladies' Championship in 1946 when she skated for the Granite Club. Tinkering with cars and boats, marine conversions in particu- lar, are among Mr. McLaugh- lin's other interests, With his 13- year-old son Peter he won the Canadian Albacore Sailing Championship in 1962. Sailing, skiing, golf and skat- ing, are among the many sports in which 'Dick' McLaughlin is interested. These interests, and an interest in the well-being of Oshawa citizens spurred his drive for a civic auditorium for the city.
