a ALD. W. R. BRANCH ~ Chairman, Executive Committee ALDERMAN BRADY ® « . Committee member 6A THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursdoy, December 10, 1964 Auditorium For All -- Of Oshawa Citizens When the last dab of paint is applied, and the last bit of wood-shaving is swept from the floor, Oshawa will have a cen- tre on Thornton road south for all ef its 70,000 citizens. The Oshawa Civic Auditorium has provided, a for almost all of recrea tional needs of the community. The Arena, with or without ice, can and will supply sports in- cluding hockey, wrestling, la- ecrosse, skating, circuses, dances, bazaars, automotive shows and exhibitions. Simultaneous with activity on the 200-feet by 85-feet ice or cement surface, four other ac- tivities can go on in the com- mittee and meeting rooms. The largest of these, in the south annex to the main building, can accommodate 300 in a meeting, and 150 in a banquet. Kitchen facilities are planned two weeks after the centre opens to the public. PROJECTED PLANS William "Bill" Kurelo, man- ager of the auditorium, antici- pates that afternoon ladies clubs will make use of the fa- cilities provided by the Audi- torium for meetings, bazaars and euchres. Projected plans for the 20-aere | ing auditorium site include a swim- ming pool, an outdoor track, a Stadium, a football field and an arts theatre. The committee has been shown arts theatres, including stage facilities, which will fit into the plan of the . | arena. Some of the tentative "spe- cials'". planned for the arena are an ice carnival, a circus, an indoor track meet, and a gala opening dance in May. Regular scheduiing in the rink will be mostly hockey and skating, featuring the Oshawa Generals and inciuding: The Neighborhood Association of Parks .League; The Oshawa Minor Hockey Association, Osh- awa Protestant Church Atom League; Oshawa Senior League; General Motors Office League; Civic Service League; The Osh- awa Figure Skating Club; roll- er skating; and public ice- skating. Mr. Kurelo is hoping that the Green Gaels, Oshawa's Minto Cup Champions, will fill the Arena in the summer, and also that professional wrestling is promoted there. The Arena seats about 3500, and a 15-foot concourse rim- ming the seats provides stand- room for 1000 more. Four lont-and-s6tt-drink concessions will be operated by the man- agement. During sports events, the normal staff of seven will increase to about 60, Mr. Kur- © elo. gaid. MAIN ARENA | The outside ring of the main arena block houses seven locker rooms, complete with showers, four washrooms, changing areas, a lounge, a press room, a first aid room, offices, boiler room, transformer room, refer- ee's quarters, and storerooms. Just off the main structure, in the south annex, are the arti- ficial-ice machine, the ice-flood- ing machine, the main lobby, a large meeting-banquet room, washrooms and a ticket office. In the inner ring of the rink will be concessions, storage rooms and checkrooms, The color-scheme of the whole building has been co-ordinated to uniformity and the furniture, from Eatons of Canada is part of the planning in this direction. Folding steel chairs will fill the arena floor for Conventions or any other special event. Of- fice and lounge furniture is in- terchangeable.
