"Bill" Kurelo Has Key Post As Manager Of Auditorium William "Bill" Kurelo is a tall, handsome 40-year-old with greying hair and a million prob- lems. He is manager of Oshawa's $1,200,000 Civic Auditorium, due to open eeerese of Hired last June, a@ year, over eight other candi- dates, the former member of the Auditorium's Board of Direc- tors, cracks he has "a problem for every dollar" the building costs. Mr. Kurelo is an Oshawa native, played hockey and soft- ball here as a boy, and later sat on the Oshawa minor Hock- ey Association executive and the Oshawa Children's Arena at $8250| Commission. WILLIAM KURELO He walked into the manager's job with his eyes open. He was able to get an insight into the myriad problems attendant to building and operating the arena when he was involved in promotion during fund-raising in 1962-63. "You have to give credit to those directors," he said the other day. "The building may not be wholly complete yet but if a manager walked in there now who had not had a chance to "grow up" with the building, he would be sunk. "There are just too many facets of the-entire operation cropping up all the time. "It is a. big challenge. but I love it. I'm learning all the time and it is very. .stimulat-. He must love it. He works a 14-hour day (closer to 20 the last two weeks) and worries night and day. He carries a pad and pencil everywhere with him and is continually jotting down items to purchase and ideas on run- ning everything from printing programs to ordering food for the building concessions. BIG JOB Bill admits he is humbled by the enormity of the job but: not overawed. He is extremely con- scientious,-ever aware he is now working for the city, and the thousands of residents here who pledged money. Early in his tenure, he. spent much of his time travelling around southern Ontario talk- ing to arena managers. He has nothing but praise for their co-operation. "Everybody. was really ter- rific to me," he says. "'E sup- pose I asked some of the strang- est questions but they all went out of their way to he'p me, And I was able to learn by their mistakes." He cited Harold Ballard at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto and Ron Simcoe at the Chil- dren's Arena here as great aids in his "indoctrination." 3 Words foreign to his vocabu- lary now spill off his tongue with ease. Words like Zamboni (the machine which scrapes and floods the ice between periods) and technical and architectural terms he has pick- ed up while roaming around the Thornton road south project site. § Bill has been out at the site every day since ground was broken, asking questions here, making suggestions there, to facilitate operations he _ en- visions introducing when the Auditorium is open. . He has worked with William |; J. Crompton, city purchasing agent, on supplies, furnishings-- from refrigerators for the' con- cession booths to drapes for the stage area to to hockey goal Stage area t> hockey - goal nets. "The Board of Directors has been good to me," Bill says. "They have allowed me a lot of leeway in setting up. pro- grams for the concessions, tick- et printing, seating and book- ing attractions."
