BX Juntl Ts Se 7 FLEMING SCORE TWO Bruins Shutout Leafs; Hawks Extend String By THE CANADIAN. PRESS In Boston's topsy hockey world, the unusual us- ually becomes usual. . Winger Reg Fleming is a case in point. His two goals and one assist paced the Bruins to a 3-0 shut- out over Toronto Maple Leafs in one of two New Year's Night oped in the National Hockey e. Chicago's streaking Black Hawks edged New York Rangers 2-1 in the other en- counter--a game that extended the Hawks' unbeaten string to 13 but failed to produce a scor- ing point for the second night in a row for Bobby Hull. Hull, who has amassed 31 goals in 34 games, failed to hit the scoresheet in the Hawks' 1-1 tie against Detroit Red Wings Thursday night. The. Bruins have been last- place finishers the last four campaigns but continue to at- tract sellout crowds at home. The fifth full house of 13,090 at Boston this season enjoyed the New Year's treat of a victory, the Bruins' eighth of the sea- son and third in their last 12 games. SHUFFLES LINES Boston coach: Milt Schmidt did some tricky line shuffling and came up with the combina- tion of Fleming on right wing, rookie Bill Knibbs at centre and Ed Westfall, a defenceman, on the left side. The line accounted for all three Boston goals. turvy | his ninth and 10th of the season » Toronto. He got a total of only with the Hawks. ; Zz | REG FLEMING Fleming's usual position is left wing. When Boston ac- quired the slim, Montreal-born forward this season he wasn't supposed to score many goals. In Chicago, where he played the last four seasons, he was primarily a_penalty-killer and penalty-collector (140 minutes jlast season), a tough guy with \a chip on his shoulder. One of his team-mates in Chi- cago, Ab McDonald, also went to Boston in the same trade. It was McDonald--56 goals in four years with Chicago--who was supposed to provide the scoring punch the Bruins so badly need. Bruins scored twice in the second period and one in the third. Goaltender Eddie Johnston was spectacular in the Boston cage, making 26 saves compared with 31 for Toronto's Johnny Bower for his second shutout of the season. The Leafs, defending Stanley Cup champions, haven't won a game since Dec. 19 when they defeated the Rangers 6-3 in Tor- onto. They have logged four de- feats and a tie in their last five jgames. The Leafs ran into big trouble in the second period when Ron Ellis, sensational rookie right winger, was knocked out when he collided with Bruin defence- man Leo Boivin and sat out the rest of the game with a mil concussion. It was the second ltime in the last three Leaf games that Ellis had been knocked out. He was kayoed d scoring. Ellis, 19, is a doubtful starter for the Leafs' game tonight. In Chicago, Dennis Hull, rookie brother of Bobby Hull, fired the winning goal in the third period as the Hawks won a tight game and moved into sole possession of first place over the idle Montreal Canadi- ens by one point. Hull's goal was the softest shot of the night by any player. He was stationed near Ranger goalie Jacques Plante when a pss from Ken Wharram got to him. Plante went down and nudged the puck a few feet in front of the net. Hull managed to get his stick on the puck as he was falling and scooped it into the cage. Rod Gilbert gave the Rangers a 14 lead in the first period, converting passes from_ line- mates Camille Henry and Phil Goyette while Chicago's Doug Jarrett was in the penalty box. Hawks tied the score late in the second frame, also on a power-play goal, with defence- man Pierre Pilote doing the BASKETBALL last Saturday by a waywrd el- bow belonging to Chicago rear- guard Al MacNeill.
