You'Re WELL! By JOSEPH MOLNER, MD Dear Dr. Molner: How can an adult member of our family be made to understand that he is in need of physical or mental help? He says that others are using dope and the fumes are smoth- ering him. He refuses to eat or be in the same room with us. He locks himself in one section of the house and stuffs the doors with rags "to keep out the fumes," and has all the win- dows open no matter what the temperature. Is he using this dope theory to hide some physical ailment, or do you think he really . be- lieves what he says?--WOR- RIED There is hardly room for doubt. The man's trouble is mental, Even if he were using the dope theory to hide some physical ailment, which I de- cidedly doubt, his. actions would still be far from normal. There ere mlenty of cases of Mental Troubles -- Difficult To Handle mental illness in which the pa- tient realizes that he needs help. There are more cases, however, in which the patient insists that he is all right and everybody else is wrong. In such instances there is no point in waiting for the patient to consult a doctor. He won't. Arguments are futile. The only course likely to succeed is to. consult your family doctor, and let him help you take such measures as well permit the man to be examined psychia- trically whether he agrees or not. ; There are some instances, I might add, in which a person, when told that he has to be ex- amined, finally will go quietly rather than have hospital atten- dants or the police escort him. Getting the patient to co-oper- ate is better for him and for everybody else than doing it by force, Dear Dr. Molner: Could you tell me about a rectum that has foatatsedly 22, River to King Medit, daughters 24, Molybdene um: sym. 1 37, Subside 9 Y 4 THE OSHAWA TIMES, - Monday, Jonuary 11, 196! 17 BRIDGE a see of clubs to. go down one, However, as was pointed out catered to that precise possi- bility. This condition is called recto- cele and is the consequence of the supportive tissues being weakened in some way. Child- birth is the most frequent cause. Let's be frank. Surgery is the only cure, At the same time, this is a happy thought: Surgi- cal correction is depend- able. You can confidently ex- d-|H. pect that after the operation, your troubles will be over. Dear Dr. Molner: Does cli- mate have any bearing on em- physema? Would a dry, or high area be better, or near the ocean with salt sea air?--MRS. . K. Climate doesn't have much ef- fect in most cases.
