Tory Papers Gloat Over Walker's Defeat rale of a government already tive, says the defeat was "dam- aging abroad for the govyern- ment especially, and it must bring speculation about a spring general election much closer." LONDON (Reuters) -- Con- servative - leaning newspapers today were gleeful over the sur- prise defeat of Foreign Secre- tary Patrick Gordon Walker in a byelection Thursday. Two right-wing papers la- belled the defeat 'public disen- chantment" and "black Fri- day" for the Labor administra- tion. The Times, independent, un- der the headline "deep damage to ronment," says Gordon Walker's failure to win a theor- etically-safe seat threw doubt struggling with difficulties. Gordon Walker's defeat was linked with the other byelection at Nuneaton in central England where fellow cabinet member Frank Cousins, minister. of technology, was elected, but by a much-reduced margin. The Daily Telegraph, Con- servative, says the first two by- elections since the new govern- ment took power last October "administered a stinging slap to Labor." | 'DAMAGING ABROAD' | embarrassment for the foreign secretary was the dramatic pub- lic censure of the government and its record, The Daily Mail says. says Overshadowing the personal The right-wing Daily Sketch in an editorial Gordon 8 Accidents Reported WHITBY (Staff) County Council's Safety Inspec tor, Robert Carter, made a total of 737 inspections during 1964.
