However, a contro- versy has arisen this past week out of Toronto in an article in the Maple Leaf Gardens Junior Hockey Pro- gram, written by Al Stewart, and entitled '"'McKenny vs, Orr." Some of the items contained sonnel in future columns. Stewart quotes Marlie Man- ager-Coach Jim Gregory, say- ing, "I wouldn't trade Mc- Kenny for Orr." As some- one else quipped, "He is absolutely right because he would never get the chance." But let's take a serious look at this statement, and its merits, First, it doesn't seem to hold much water when last year's statistics show that Jim McKenny, playing. with a Orr Never Quits, Let's now turn to another side of hockey ability, name- ly, the psychological. All of us have heard, or made statements, from time to time that such and such a player has a world of ability if only he would hustle, or if he just had more desire, etc. The truth is that a player of that nature is really lacking in ability in some areas because desire is a part of ability, and a player who has great physical attributes, but lacks desire, is lacking in some ability. Orr is 'outstanding in this department for he has "gobs"' of desire to go along with the great natural physical abili- ity he has. On the other hand, McKenny, who has good physical ability, often appears to be lacking in the depart- ment commonly known as de- sire, Orr never quits, and takes defeat or mistakes made by himself very hard. This is something you must have if you are going to be a at athlete, and it is per- ips in this particular area than any other, in our whereby Orr over- shadows McKenny. Let me hasten to point out that McKenny is a fine hock- ey player. I was very high on him in his midget year, and the Bruins and the Leafs fought it out for McKenny's signature the same year that 'Orr signed with Boston. We almost also had McKenny, but at the last moment he changed his mind and signed with Toronto. The reason I mention this is to strongly point out that we have a high regard for Jimmy's ability, but certainly in no way can I first place team (one of the strongest in the history of Junior Hockey) totalled 38 scoring points for the season, Bobby Orr, on the other hand, played with a sixth place club, and amassed 73 scoring points for the season,' or almost twice as many as McKenny. It is also interesting to note that Orr performed this while almost two years younger than McKenny. There is also a suggestion from time to time that Orr is not too strong defensively, but this is certainly not borne out by the feeling of opposing forwards in the Junior "A" League. Wayne Carleton, one of the better forwards of the Marlboros, says that Orr is probably one of the hardest defensemen to go around, be- cause he always gets in your way somehow. The other great feature Orr has as a defenseman is his uncanny ability to get the puck out of his own end, and we submit that this is one of the strong- est assets a defenseman can have, since, unless you have rearguards who can do this, your club. is always in trouble behind the blue line. This was one of the greatest assets that Doug Harvey had throughout all his great years in the National Hockey League. High In Hustle agree with the statement that a person wouldn't trade Mc- Kenny for Orr. Although Jim Gregory is a personal friend of ours, and I have a high regard for his hockey ability, I am positive that few hockey men would agree with his assessment of these two players at this par- ticular time. However, time will tell, and everyone inter- ested will watch the progress of these two fine young play- ers as they bid for careers in the National Hockey League. It seems that both will likely make it to the NHL and the final yardstick will be ability, dedication, and desire, and the greatest thing that could happen to both these players would be that ten years from now people would still be arguing which one of them is the best national leaguer. For both their sakes, we kind of hope that this might become the case. Another thing we would hasten to point out to friend Al Stewart is a paragraph in the same article, that Orr scored only 29 goals last year, and not 30, therefore setting a new record, Sports writer, Gerry Sutton, of this paper, points out that last year, while working at Canadian Press, Joe Laman- tia, official scorer of the Jun- jor OHA, phoned him at CP, and said he would like to cor- rect a mistake which showed Orr with only 29 goals, and change it to read 30 goals. Sutton, who was handling most of the Junior "A" copy for CP at that time, strongly refutes this item in the Gar- dens Program.
