SPORTSCOPE BY GERRY SUTTON Did you know that 171,886 boys under the age of 18 took part in properly supervised hockey in 1963-642 This year many new faces will share the joy or sorrow of winning and losing during competitive action. These youngsters hold the spot- light until January 31 as Minor Hockey Week is held across Canada. The activities--which started on Saturday--covers Yeague and exhibition games with a special invitation to par- ents to watch their youths display their skills. Dedicated citizens give their time and efforts to make it possible for boys to Rave fun on ice. Here in Oshawa, President Cliff Maddock of the Oshawa Minor Association has three vice-presidents, John McLean,*Winston Brant and Bob Heard, who aid him throughout the season. Don Trotter and Murray Brant, both conveners and executive members, rate at the top of the list for their efforts. It is impossible to mention everyone who contributes a part in building better citizens for tomorrow. However, parents have all week to thank them by attending the minor games. OSHAWA BOXER IN GOLDEN GLOVES BID Bernie Guindon, considered one of the best welterweight boxers in this area, will take part in elimination bouts at Buffalo Tuesday in prepara- tion for the New York State Golden Gloves Championship. The best amateur fighters from Canada and New York State participate in these bouts with the winners ad- vancing to the N.Y. finals, In another week or two. In 28 fights, Guindon has only lost three times. He will also accompany Grant O'Reilly to Toronto on February 1 for : matches at Maple Leaf Gard- GERRY SUTTON ens, Members of the Oshawa Boxing Club, O'Reilly and Guindon will be fighting in the pre- liminaries to the George Chuvalo versus Floyd Patterson, 12- round bout. Although the Chuvalo-Patterson fight is staged at Madison Square Garden in New York, it is shown on eidphor at the Gardens in Toronto. The Oshawa Boxing Club has no reg- ular clubhouse where it is possible to train. The boxers usual- ly end up in Guindon's basement or go through their paces at the Simcoe Hall Boys' Club on Eulalie. It would be nice if these young fighters had a place of their own for training periods. GREEN GAEL ACES ON WESTERN TEAMS Ken Thompson and Neil Armstrong, two of the top play- ers who led Oshawa Green Gaels to the Canadian Junior La- crosse Championship, keep in shape by playing hockey during the off-season. Thompson is with Weyburn in the Saskatche- wan Junior League and claims 54 points, including 34 goals. Armstrong toils for Winnipeg Rangers in the Manitoba Jr. circuit . ... Marcel Boivin had a big night in the General Motors Employee Basketball League on Saturday as he picked up a record-tying 33 points. The mark was first set by Gary Vaughan two years ago...
