B THE OSHAWA Times, Tuesday, January 26, 1968 Ajax Council Sees New Library Plans . AJAX (Staff) -- The Ajax library Board, Monday night, asked Ajax Town Council for -its new library estimated to cost $66,000. 'Plans for the 5000 square feet structure were unveiled by Library Board Chairman David 'Kerry and Ajax original town planner architect Kent Barker. The plan proposes a rectangu- lar concrete block building one- storey high with a flat roof fac- ing King's crescent next to the auliting wooden structure. The building would be 95 feet long and 55 feet deep with an ex- pansion possibility of 20 feet on each side. ONE STAFF MEMBER The $66,000 figure would not include any furnishings and it is expected to use the existing bookshelves from the present library. Councillor William Legros asked Mr. Kerry what was needed. to open the library on two more nights of the week and wondered why juvenile bor- rowing was down from previ- ous years. Mr. Kerry explained that juvenile borrowing was down because the Ajax Public School system is now providing libraries for its students and that juveniles were growing up and joining the adult section of the library. It would cost an additional $8 or $900 annually to ed during 1964 took a jump of 1011 to 15,382 or 42 per cent of all books loaned to adults. A total of 705 new readers in both juvenile and adult cate- gories, the annual report shows, gives the library a total mem- bership of 3681, which, Mr. Kerry explained, was one of the highest per capita in Can- ada.
