SPRING M Tailored, yet feminine, this hat in white straw with a softly rounded crown is Northern Couple Receives Gift 7 (Of Eskimo Daughter TORONTO (CP) -- Mr. and Mrs. John D. Fourneaux have a 14-month-old Eskimo daughter given them as a gift by her parents. Mr, Fourneaux is a northern services officer in Povungnituk, Que. In Toronto for a week with the little girl, the couple said she is the youngest of 11 chil- _|dren born to Isa Sivuarapik and his wife, Mary Qupiruaruk. She {has been named Eva Nuvalinga Janice Fourneaux. Mr. and Mrs. Fourneaux said as far as they know this is the first time an Eskimo baby has been given to a white couple, and they consider it a great honor, It is not unusual, they said, for one Eskimo couple to give a child to another Eskimo couple to raise. The red-beanded civil servant and his wife said they would like to adopt Eva 'legally, but Quebec law makes it unlikely. A child is legally adoptable in Quebec only if its parents are dead or insane or if the child is illegitimate. Eva's family visit her often, Mrs. Fourneaux said, and they hope she will grow up able to speak Eskimo as well as Eng- lish and French. Eva was painted by Port Credit, Ont., artist Jean Twist ANN LANDERS A Check-Up Can Save a Marriage Dear Ann Landers: You saved, our marriage. I was actually packing my suitcase when the mailman delivered your letter. Your advice was as follows, "Tt would be foolish to leave your husband. It sounds as if tne man needs to see a doctor. By all means insist that he get a physica! checkup." I showed Howard your letter and he agreed to see our family doctor. I guess he was shocked that I had written to you. Also he was surprised you answered, He said he didn't think you'd bother. Well, Ann, the doctor gave Howard a series of tests and found out that he was danger- ously anemic and had a low grade infection. No wonder the guy was tired and irritable all the time and had no interest in me or anything else. Now. four weeks later, How- ard is like a new man, The shots and pills have done won- ders for him. (CP Wirephoto) CHILD GUIDANCE Additional Stride Brings Better Understanding By GARRY C. MYERS, Ph.D. Whether we are Protestant, Catholic, Jewish or of any other religious faith, or of no religious faith at all, we have reasons to rejoice over a recent event in kome. On November 20, 1964, the Ecumenical Coun- cil voted overwhelmingly ap- proval of a document condemn- ing anti-Semitism and forbid- ding Roman Catholics to blame Jews for the Crucifixion. According to the press report of an official summary, a key passage in the document as- serts: "What happened to Christ in His passion cannot be attributed to the whole (Jew- ish) people then alive, much less to that of today. Besides, the Church held and holds that Christ underwent His passion and death freely because of the sins of all men and out of in- finite love." Leaders of fourteen major Jewish organizations applauded the Council's statement as a milestone in the elimination of anti-Semitism. All the rest of us who call ourselves Christians join in this applause. It brings us hope that the hatreds and inhumanities in the hearts of many of us Christians and of our children will be displaced with the kind of love which Jesus lived and taught. This transition will not hap- and sisters have died of tuber- culosis. effectively to a whole class- room. Listening children like to be near the reader so they can see the pictures illustrating what she reads. As they look and listen, they wish for the time when they can read. They gain much to think about and talk about. They are practiced in concentration. are Protestant parents will see the good influence on our chil- dren wh) mingle with Roman Catholic children whose parents accept their Church's recent in- terpretation You and I may remember well hearing children, maybe our own children, around Christmastime or LEastertime saying, "The Jews had killed Jesus;" you may even have heard such in church or Sunday school during your lifetime. How hard for your child or mine believing this and hearing it said over and over again to feel kindly toward Jewish chil- dren. How could they keep from harboring .some hate in their minds and hearts for all Jews? As we and our children come to feel more kindly and appre- ciative of our Jewish neighbors and their religion, we also should grow more appreciative of persons of all religious faiths, toward al' other persons, indeed who differ from us in any way. In doing so we Christians should grow to be better Christians. PARENTS' QUESTIONS Q. Why do you advise that mothers be asked to read at school to small groups of chil- dren in the kindergarten and early grades? A. The teachers can't read as DO YOU WRITE LETTERS? A few of the most ardent Christians -- Protestants and Catholics--who from their early childhood heard and oft re- peated the myth that the Jews were responsible for the Cruci- fixion of Jesus may still harbor this notion with hatred in their hearts. As you and I know, ac- knowledged historians of all our leading religious faiths have shattered this myth. With the Roman Catholic church taking its stand, many Protestant organizations will probably follow suit.
