i aa tae Se ee their brooms on the Domin- ONTARIO'S SIX leading ion Silver "D" Trophy in ladies of curling, line up the provincial champion- ship being sponsored in Port Arthur this week by Domin- SPORTS MENU BY GEORGE H. CAMPBELL Sports Editor of The Times OSHAWA GENERALS are moving into the crucial, closing phase of their OHA Junior "A" schedule dates .and the situa- tion is far from a happy one. Taking only a casual glance at the official standing, one might get the idea that the Generals were in a very happy position but actually, they can be far from content with the possibilities that exist. They, the Gen- erals, are currently clinging to fourth place and with the top six teams eligible for the post-schedule playoffs, that clinging act has to be a grim one. Montreal Canadiens are only two points behind but they have three more games to play than Oshawa. Kitchener and St. Catharines are tied for sixth place at the moment, seven points behind the Generals. Of the two, the Black Hawks have to be considered a real threat. They have two more games to play than both Oshawa and Kitchener. Adding this all up, it becomes apparent that since Generals have still got to play these teams that are now breathing right down their necks, they'll have to grab two points or even one, just as often as they possibly can. They get what is perhaps their best chance of the remaining sched- ule, here at home tonight. It's Hamilton Red Wings visiting the Generals at Civic Auditorium this evening and it should be a scorcher. The Red Wings figure they still have a chance to make sixth place, too -- so they'll be going all-out, like they did in that 11-10 win over St. Kitts, last week. THE WEEKEND saw the OHA meet out the equivalent of an 11-game suspension, to Oshawa's Danny O'Shea. The Gen- erals' former team captain, who had already missed about 20 games, due to a knee injury, finally got back into the lineup, about two weeks ago and in his second game, got into a fracas which involved a linesman and, to some extent, also the ref- eree, one Hughie McLean. The OHA Sub-Committee met on Saturday and, after hearing from all involved, settled on sug- gestions that ranged from a fine to a full-season suspension, to suspend O'Shea until March Ist. That meant eight more games, in addition to the three had already sat out. With Buchanan on the limp and O'Shea on the. sidelines, Oshawa's scoring punch is greatly muffled. Some fans have voiced irate opinions. This corner will admit that a little extra tol- erance would have been welcome, a big help to Oshawa's bid to retain a playoff position. However, the OHA could not be expected to be influenced by the fact that O'Shea had already 'missed 20 games this season, due to an injury, nor that the Generals are already riddled by injuries to other key mem- bers of the team. And also -- they wouldn't show any sym- pathy to the fact that O'Shea's suspension and Generals' slump might hurt the attendance at Civic Auditorium. OSHAWA GOLF CLUB members (ladies' section), happy and very busy yesterday, efficiently running off their annual two-day open bonspiel, (which by the way, concludes this even- ing, with The GM Trophy to the top winners) had their en- thusiasm dampened considerably yesterday when word came in from Port Arthur. "Effie" Hezzelwood and her Oshawa rink, bidding for the Ontario Silver "D" title and a bid at Dominion Diamond "D" championships, lost their first game, 11-9, in a heart-breaking last-end finish, to Fern Irwin's Dixie rink, 1964 Ontario champions. But in the second round, the Oshawa gals were whipped 15-1, which about kills their chances. However, they did come back with a great display of fighting spirit to knock off the unbeaten Sudbury rink, in their third round. The Oshawa rink may not win the Silver "D" but they've already established their popularity and they'll not be disgraced. ion Stores Limited. After all, the viva- cious Oshawa golf club skip did recover from a serious, mul- tinle hip fracture, to lead her rink to the Southeastern Ontario title, in the space of only a few months. : But yesterday, as the Domin- ion Silver "D" provincial la- dies' curling championship got underway here, she demon- strated that plucky persever- ance in the space of only a few hours. ' After losing a heartbreaking last-end 11-9 decision, to Dixie's Mrs. Fern Irwin and then ab- sorbing a humiliating 15-1 trim- ming from Kingston's Mrs. Jen- nie Walsh, Effie recovered to upset the previously unbeaten Mrs. Vivian McDougall rink from Sudbury 13-8. This kept alive, albeit dimly, Oshawa's hopes of its first provincial title since Dominion Stores Limited organized ladies curling into provincial and national finals, five years ago. HOME FANS LIKE OSHAWA "I guess we just don't know how to give up,"' grinned Mrs. Hezzelwood in a masterful piece of understatement. And, after yesierday's demonstration, Port Arthur fans agree. They've join- ed the dozen Oshawa fans who accompanied the rink here, in making Effie's rink their sen- timental choice. Mrs. McDouglass had beaten Port Arthur's Mrs. Elsie For- Syth 9-4 and Niagara Fal}*' Mrs. Aileen Kelsall 12-9, when she met Mrs. Hezzlewood. After- ward, she found herself tied at two wins and a loss with Mrs. Kelsall, behind the unbeaten Mrs. Fern Irwin, who added to her triumph over Oshawa's pride, succeeding wins from Mrs. Forsyth 11-2 and Mrs. Walsh 10-3. Mrs. Kelsall scored her wins over Mrs. Walsh 12-6 and Mrs. Forsyth 11-8. The only former champion in the round-robin series, 1962}15-1 winner Fern Irwin had more difficulty with Mrs. Hezzelwood than anyone else. Effie surren- dered two in the first, came right back with three and after dropping behind 5-3 in the third, kept persevering until she tied the match 9-9 with a three in the eighth. Mrs. Irwin then blanked the ninth and made one of her many: briliant doubles with her first rock on the 10th to win. ONE TO FORGET The second draw is something Mrs. Hezzelwood, her third Mer- lee Lawrence, second Ann Gay and lead Marg Jacobi would rather not have reported in the hometown press. She didn't even score until the seventh, by which time Mrs. Walsh had BALTIMORE (AP) -- Balti- more Orioles, barely edged out for the 1964 American League pennant by New York, hope Steve Barber pitches as well against the rest of the league in 1965 as he did against the Yankees last year. Barber, a veteran lefthander, signed his contract Sunday, taking a reported $2,000 cut to a salary of $23,000. Barber's record in /the last five years -- his entire major league production--is 66-51. His performance last year, though, was not too valuable to the Orioles, who wound up the sea- son a mere two games behind the Yankees in third place. After becoming the first mod- ern Oriole to win 20 games in 1963, Barber was expected to afternoon she winds up against be the ace of the pitching staff amassed nine shots, and then she gave up a fat five on the eighth to capitulate in the ninth RETURN TO FORM But against Mrs. McDougall, Oshawa recovered their hitting accuracy and draw weight, both of which were missing in the afternoon round. A four in the second shot them in front and after temporarily losing the lead to trail 7-6 after six, they scored three on the seventh and held on, closing with a stolen three on the 10th.
