ORR CONNECTS--De- fenceman Bobby Orr bangs home No. 29 past goalten- der Jean Ruest in first pe- RECORD-PENALTY riod action of the OHA Jun- ior "A" game at the Civic Auditorium last night. The popular Parry Sound youth GAME Generals Bomb Wings To Snap Losing String By GERRY SUTTON Boxing on skates highlighted the so-called OHA Junior A game between Oshawa Generals and Hamilton Red Wings at the Civic Auditorium last night. A record 232 minutes in pen- alties -- nearly four hours in the sin-bin -- were racked up by players on both teams as Generals eased to a 9-3 victory. Referee Bob Nadin of Toronto was the busiest man on the ice handing out 20 majors, two 10- minute misconducts and four game misconducts. Only four players on each team escaped any penalties The win broke a five- -game losing streak and strengthened Generals' grip on fourth place. They have a four-point lead ever Montreal Junior Cana- diens, who have four games in hand. Hamilton, last in the eight-team league, remained four points out of a playoff spot. Oshawa's phenomenal de- fenceman, Bobby Orr, was the outstanding player with a seven- night, including two goals and five assists. The goals were Orr's 29th and Mth of the year, tying the scor- ing record for defencemen which he set last season. BUCHANAN RETURNS Lanky Ron Buchanan return- ed to the Generals lineup after missing three games with a knee injury and his appearance triggered the best offensive dis- play for Oshawa. in several weeks. The 20 - year - old Buchanan notched three goals and two as- aists to stretch his point-scoring streak to 24 games He now has 41 goals and stands seventh in the scoring race. Gifted with the guts and de- sire that makes him a fierce competitor, Buchanan has bounced back from a_ shoulder separation and other ailments to rank as one of the top centres in the circuit. Bill Bannerman, Chris Rob- erts, Jim Whittaker and Jim Booth were the other Oshawa marksmen. For the 16-year-old Whittaker, another Parry Sound product, it was his first goal in Junior A hockey. Leftwinger Nick Libett paced Red Wings with two goals. Real Peters earned two assists. Brawls punctuated the first two periods as both teams took exception to the Icast little in- cident. Hamilton received 144 minutes while Oshawa got 88 and for a good part of the game the teams played three aside. Jean Guy. Ruest started in goal for the Red Wings but was replaced by Peter Fritsch for the remaining two periods. The Hamilton goalies combined for 36 saves while Dennis Gibson, in goal for Oshawa, turned aside 22 shots. BLUELINE NOTES -- Gen- erals travel to Orillia tonight for a benefit exhibition game against the Niagara Falls Fly- ers. The same Flyers will be here Saturday in regular league action. The following day Gen- erals journey to Pembroke in a match for a game against Pem- broke Lumber Kings of the Cen- tral Junior League ... Coach Jim Cherry deserves credit for controlling his players as they tried to jump over the boards to assist their teammates dur-|; ing the fights . .. Cherry also inserted Chris Roberts on the forward line and the Kingston native responded with a fine two-way performance, scoring Hamilton marker. Captain Jim)... tallied his 30th goal in the second frame to equal the goal-scoring record for de- fencemen which he set last Bobby Orr is featured in MacLean's magazine this week. The young defenceman and Ron Buchanan share the cover photo with two Hamilton players . . The four players who received game misconducts, Gary Doak, Fred Speck, Peter Loveless, all of Hamilton, and Martin Buchar of Generals will also be fined $25 by the OHA. Last night, Bobby scored his 2th and Wth goals of the sea- son against. Hamilton Red Wings and in doing so equalled the record he set last year. The record-tying goal came at the 1.17 mark of the second period when Orr took the puck in his own end and _ stick- handled through three Red Wing forwards, shot from the edge of the faceoff circle, went through two defencemen and poked hig own rebound. under Hamilton goalie Peter Fritsch. For this effort, Bobby was given a standing ovation by the hometown crowd of 1,844 that lasted for 30 seconds. Not content with two goals, he also assisted on five others. Orr, a lé6-yearold Parry Sound native, might well have rr Equals broken the record later in the game when his teammates, on orders from coach Jim Cherry started teeding him passes. But Bobby chose to pass the puck to other players who were in a better scoring position. After the game he had only praise for his fellow players. "I wouldn't know what to do without these guys, they are a great bunch," he said. Coach Cherry said he gave instructions to the players in the last five minutes to start feeding the puck to Orr. Bobby, the chance of breaking the record before the home crowd," he said. Genera: Manager Wren Blair said it was great to see Bobby tie the record at this time in the season and he hoped he would break it against Niagara Falls on Saturday night in Oshawa.
