What do I use for a finishing coat? ANSWER: Rush usually has a shellac finish; use denatured al- cohol to remove the old finish. (If varnished, then use a pre- red paint remover, following abe] directions carefully.) Rush is usually left its natural color, not stained. To the clean, dry surface apply ready - to - use shellac available now in aerosol form. Or brush on thin coat of pure, fresh, white shellac, thin- ned half and half with denatured alcohol. CAT ODOR ON FLOOR QUESTION:: We have just pur- chased a new (to us) house and are thrilled with it, but ran up against one problem: One of the sheds attached to the house proper has a wooden floor which has a strong cat odor. How can we correct this situation? ANSWER: Clean the floor with a good floor cleaner and No. 1 steel wool. Then scatter liberal amounts of moth crystals or flakes over the floor and keep the shed closed for several days (the moth crystals are a power- ful deodorizer, as well as moth preventive). The crystals will leave an odor, but this will dis- appear quickly on airing. Re- peat, if necessary. LINE MARKS CLOTHES QUESTION: More than year ago we put up all alumi- num clothes lines outside. They have lived up to the manufac- turer's statement by not: sag- ging, but it is impossible to completely remove black marks} that mark each edge of the clothes, not only under each clothes pin, but when the wind blows the wet clothes into the line itself. Have used a damp cloth with yellow bar soap rub- bed on, as directions said, but it does not help. What would you suggest? ANSWER: Wash aluminum line to remove all trace of soot, grease, etc., and wipe dry, after rinsing well to remove all trace of cleaner. Then apply two coats of good quality spar var- nish to entirely coat the metal surface. This will require -periodic renewal. | a AILING HOME STICKY SHELLAC SHELVES QUESTION: I shellacked some | wall shelves to add to the book shelves I have on the living room walls. But, after two weeks, the shellac is still sticky to the touch. What causes this How can it be corrected ANSWER: Probably you were sold a poor quality of shellac or an old shellac. The best solution is to remove the present finish with denatured alcohol. Then re- finish with a pure, fresh shellac, made by one of the well-known paint manufacturers, | | MAPLE FURNITURE STAIN QUESTION: How can I mix a Stain that approximates the color used-on maple furniture! today - | ANSWER: I recommend look-| ing at manufacturers' color ecards of ready - mixed wood stains, available at paint and hardware dealers.
