PUC USES 53-PASSENGER DIESELS IN SERVICE Two 53-. passenger Diesel > busés of this type were pur- chased by Oshawa's PUC in 1964 to meet transportation problems brought on by in- creasing population. Last year, 3,165,828 passengers rode city buses, a decrease of 97,394 from the. previous year; but PUC buses in 1964 traveiie1 839,527 miles com- pared with 831,909 miles in 1963. New $221,000 Bus Garage To Be Ready In 2 Months Oshawa's bus départment has, me is, taking on, a -brahd new k. * The last phase 'of the 'new look" is being 'constructed' on Farewell street in the city's Industria! Park. When the new 25,000 square foot $221,850, bus garage is completed, within the next two months, the Public Utilities Commission - operated bus sysiem will have been al- most entirely overhauled. The PUC, at the request of city council, took over the bus department operations in 1960. At that time there was a fleet of. 21-buses and the Hillcroft bus garage was rented from the CNR. Now, four years later, 26 new buses' have replaced the old ones and a new garage is hearing completion. The over- haul has: cost the city money (the bus department has been Operating at a loss each year) in the United States and the strike by the United Auto Work- ers union. in. Oshawa reduced the number of passengers. RETAIL: SALES HIGH STANDARDS Of more than 14,000 homes in the Oshawa area only 17 of these are found to be below standard by the Central Mortgage and Hotising Authority. In. five years, retail sales in the City of Oshawa have claim- ed 28 per cent.and now stand 34 per cent above the national pér capita 'average.
