Dear Dr. Molner: Is it true that three days after a vaccin- ation, the place should be wiped, or alcohol applied to it? My doc- tor says nothing should be put on it, but mothers of other children in. my neighborhood say you should. My child was 18 months old when he was vaccinated. He had a severe reaction with fever of 102 to 104. He also got an ear infection. Also is there a disease that can cause vaccination through- out the body?--MRS, R. C, It's best not to cover a vac- cination with anything, not even a gauze bandage, nor the plastic shields that were being used 30 or 40 years. ago. Reason? The shields did no particular. good and were,a nuisance. And gauze can stick to the scab, break it loose, and thus delay healing. If there happens to be con- siderable discharge from the vaccinated area, it is all right-- in fact it's a good idea--to dab the sking around the scab with soap and water or with alcohol, just to keep it clean. But don't wipe across the scab itself, for fear of cracking it or pulling it loose. It is not unusual to develop some fever after a smallpox vaccination, Children are quite likely to have more fever than an adult, They react a little harder to many things, but they get over them faster, too, as a rule, In your little boy's case, the vaccination could have had nothing to do with the ear in- fection. I suspect, however, that} the infection, coming along at this same time, boosted the fever much more than the vac- cination would have done alone. smoke" character 10 A.M. to 10 P.M. 728-6341 OPEN DAILY 'TIL 10 P.M. Seven Days « Week @ Groceri © Fresh Fruits © Vegetables © Meats FREE DELIVERY 40 V/ Y Your last questionpuzzles me a bit. You may have reference to a condition callee "general- ized vaccinia," a rather rare type of reaction which some- times can occur because of a peculiar sensitivity to smallpox vaccination. It is unpleasant but not dangerous. There's one other possibility that I'll mention since I'm not altogether sure of your question. Sometimes someone scratches a vaccination, gets traces of the vaccine under the fingernails, and then scratches himseif else- where, or touches the fingers to a spot where the skin has been broken. In that way another, usually secondary, vaccination spot can occur. But it's nothing to fret about.
