My doctor said there were ameba, I followed through on a 21-day course of medicine, expecting that that would be all there was to it, but I have had two added courses since Will you tell me something about this parasite, or ameba, and can it be controlled? -- G.A.S. The ameba can take from three weeks to three months after exposure before it has multiplied in the intestinal tract. Then come dysentery or diarr- hea, not necessarily any. fever, but abdominal cramps and sometimes blood in the stool. The ameba can migrate to the liver and cause cysts. Some people harbor the para- site without themselves being sick--"carriers."' In some south- ern areas as many as 10 to 20 per cent of, the people have been found harboring the am- eba. It seems that Fred, on this occasion, was playing in a team of four match and held the South hand. He was the dealer and opened with one spade. Now it is true that most players would have opened the bidding with two spades with Fred's hand, but Fred was not often inclined to do what most play- ers would do. West overcalled with two dia- monds and East jumped to five diamonds. This development did not faze Fred, who now bid five hearts in what can best be de- scribed as a forcing voice. North then came to life and raised the ante to six hearts, which West doubled violently after two passes, West led the ace of diamonds, Fred ruffed, of course, and played the king of hearts, East showing out. This complication, with West have all four missing trumps, might have upset a different declarer, but Fred, as usual, took the 4-0 break in stride. When he then cashed the ace of clubs and West dropped the queen on it, Fred's face lit up like a Christmas tree. Situations like this were always a source of great joy to him and he pro- ceeded to make the contract in his usual bang-bang style. He led the six of hearts and finessed the eight, and then, after ruffing the jack of dia- monds with the queen of hearts, led the seven and finessed the ten.
