But thousands of other items, from shoes to perambulators, will be excluded from the new law--until such tinie as the slow-moving courts sit in judg- ment on each case. In one field--liquor--prices al- ready have started to drop. Two big British distilleries have ended price-fixing 'on brands they control. As a result, prices of whisky, gin and vodka dropped as much as $1.05 a bot- tle in some major supermar- kets, The resale price maintenance ban was heartily welcomed by Britain's chain stores and . |supermarkets and roundly con- demned by the corner shops which fear for their future, Yet there are so many loop- holes in the new law that the small independent retailer may still be able to eke out an ex- istence for many years to come. A retailer who complains that 'ja certain manufacturer has cut off supplies because retail prices were reduced will have to seek redress through a civil action in the courts. The gov- ernment will have power to seek an injunction on behalf of the aggrieved retailer but there is no plan to set up vast gov- ernment machinery to provide swift action on complaints. A. manufacturer who likes to restrict the retail distribution of his goods can go on doing so. Suppliers who like to deal with exclusive agencies or establish certain restricted franchises can continue the old way of do- ing business. There will be no government' interference. And suppliers who have rea- son to believe that the retailer is simply using his products to attract trade as non-profit loss leaders can immediately halt supplies. This discretion is in the hands of the suppliers. t s| | A BUSINESS a e ANNOUNCEMENT OPPORTUNITY "t e OFFER ITS VALUAB d d e n THE LARGEST, MOST SUCCESSFUL COMPANY OF ITS KIND CAN NOW IN CANADA CAN YOU QUALIFY able Business Qapertenieyt The introduction a LE DISTRIBUTORSHIPS For this profit- exclusive new s has dictrih bhi Fe services, C] g new ps with our Pome desirah! edian uel or a husbond and wife prestige business with a secu r e for a individ- team.
