FIRST AID TO AILING HOME RUST STAINS ON STONE the sweating walls and floor QUESTION: My gray lannon stone building front has yellow stains caused by lengthy sprink- ling of water from our well. This water is not filtered and has excessive rust content. Now have water pumped from city system to sprinkler. What can be done to remove the stains? ANSWER: Stain removing preparations are available at some hardware dealers; follow manufacturer's label instruc- may be due to condensation when the usually humid cellar air comes in contact with the cooler concrete walls and floor. Better air circulation and venti- lation should be provided. Win- dows or louvers should be kept open on dry, clear days; placing an electric fan, directed along the floor and toward an open window opposite, will help. Preparations for absorbing moisture from the air are wide- ly available at housewares and tions carefully. It's water conditioning. Chicago's new 55-storey luxury apartment building at 1,000 Lake Shore Plaza (the tallest rein- forced concrete apartment build- ing in the world) will have the city's first fully integrated water conditioning system for apart- ment dwellers, All 138 apart- ments housing an estimated 320 tenants, will be served up con- ditioned water by a_ gigantic, 3-phase sodium ion exchanger being installed by the Lindsay Co., of St. Paul, Minnesota. The exchanger will work very much like any home water softener. It will replace mole- cules of calcium and other "hard" chemicals taken from the water with sodium molecules from ordinary salt. Using 1,500 pounds of salt per month, it is expected to convert the hard Lake Michigan water to rain- like softness and purity. The luxury of a soft water shave, shower and shampoo will cost the rent payer nothing extra. The water conditioning system is supposed to pay for itself by saving the building money on maintenance. Plastic Used To Replace Tops Kitchen counter tops can be replaced with laminated plastic) where a decorative as well as| useful surface is desired. If the present counter top is| wood, the plastic can be cement-| ed directly to it provided that) all grease, dirt, paint, etc., are) removed from it. The wood should be sanded before the bonding. The same procedure should be followed when some other material is removed from the wooden base, with special care given to taking off all the) old adhesive. | The best way to insure cut-| ting the laminating plastic to) the exact size, especially in the) area around the sink, is to make} a paper or cardboard template, or model, In cutting the plastic to the paper pattern, keep the] decorative side of the plastic) face up. . Use a fine-toothed crosscut saw, cutting only on| the downstroke. Allow one-) eighth of an inch overhang,| which can be filed off later.' When making curved cuts, use a keyhole saw. Place the laminated plastic over the area to be covered be- fore putting on. any adhesive. Once you are sure the fit is) perfect, apply contact cement to} both the wooden top and the) back of the plastic. | Buying or Selling !
