12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, Merch 25, 1965 Cassius Is Thespian If Publicity In Sight .. By WILL GRIMSLEY _ MIAMI BEACH, Fila. (AP)-- "Let Cassius see a few guys with pencils in their hands and he changes completely," says Angelo Dundee, manager and trainer of the world heavy- weight boxing champion. "He suddenly goes on stage." Cassius Clay, alias Muhamad Ali, is the first to acknowledge that he is a big ham, although ham or any form of pork is an abscene word to his Black Mus- lim religion. "It's just a gimmick,' the ehamp confides when he es- eapes from the hurly-burly and relaxes in the steamy broom closet that serves as his dress- ing room at the Fifth Street Gym. "I yell and I rant. I bang my cane. I run off my big mouth. People think I'm crazy until I make good my boasts--like last year against that big ugly bear, Sonny Liston. "Some people get offended by my bragging. But they talk about me, and they come out hoping to see me get my head knocked off. It helps boxing and brings bigger crowds." Cassius still chortles over the wild demonstration he staged at the weigh-in before his title fight with Liston here last year. With a glassy look in his eye, he stormed around the ring, brandishing his fists and bel- lowing loud threats. He was a man gone berserk. His friends couldn't - restrain him. Observers thought he was crazed: by fear of facing Liston. Psychiatric tests were called for and experts said he'd never answer. the bell. The boxing commission fined him $2,500. That evening Clay, a 7-to-1 underdog, entered the ring re- laxed and determined and pro- ceeded to'chop the cumbersome Liston into hamburger before Sonny declined to answer the bell for the seventh round. "T sure fooled you guys that time," the champion said with a mischievous wink. Clay contends he will have a startling new gimmick for his return engagement with Liston) at Boston May 25. "['m working on it and it will be earth-shaking," he said. He commutes between his home in a Negro section of Mi- ami and the Miami Beach gym in a bright red Cadillac, with his three-man entourage. As crowds swarm around him, he raises his hand in a kingly gesture and yells: "T am the greatest. I am' the prettiest. I am the purest, I am the most popular. champion in all the world." | Does Cassius believe it? Who knows? MAKING HEADWAY Physical Fitness Group Recognized By BOB MacKENZIE OTTAWA (CP)--Kind words and compliments have been scarce for the Canadian Fitness and Amateur Sport Directorate since it was set up by the fed- eral government in 1961. It's been more normal for it to be viewed with suspicion on the one hand, or to be looked upon merely as a source of handouts on the other. But director Roger Dion hopes a change is in store. "To some people we are just an e¢asy source of money," he says. "To others, especially the overning bodies of some of the less popular sports, we are part of a sinister plot to take over their jobs. "We've got a bad image from either side, but after three years of operation we've been getting acquainted with people and, With our expansion this summer, should come of age this year." Set up as a branch of the health department to "encour- age, promote and develop fit- ness and amateur sports in Can- ada," the directorate has rather limited power to initiate pro- grams. ' "We can't push anyone. We can't take over any operations. All we can do is advise and help out financially when other groups decide on their pro- grams." BUDGET GROWS The directorate started with a $1,000,000 budget in its first year, and has had it increased by that amount each year. It is running on a $3,000,000 budget for the present: fiscal year end- ing March 31, will go up to $4,000,000 next year and reach a limit of $5,000,000 for 1966-67. About 70 per cent of the bud- get goes for training programs at the college level, coaching clinics and training camps, pro- duction of training manuals and films and grants for competi: tion. But Dion, 38, a former Univer- sity of Ottawa lecturer and rec- reation consultant, expects the big change to come when his staff is filled out. At present there is one official assistant di- rector, Jean Carmichael, an Ot- tawa native who deals with universities on grants for schol- arships and fellowships. This is only one of three main sections the directorate covers. The staff expansion includes ad- dition of two assistant directors for the other sections. One of the posts will be filled April 1 when 36-year-old Tom tional sports governing bodies. | "Tom's an ideal man for the job. He was hockey coach at Ohio State University when he was hired, and has played ama- teur football and baseball. "But he's a lot more than just a former athlete. He's got his master's degree in physical edu-| doctorate. "He's taught at the high school and college levels and has spent a lot of time in sport research and administration. "With this background he should be in an excellent posi- tion to keep us informed of the needs of amateur sports bodies in Canada." to be hired. DYSON SET EXAMPLE The directorate may not have the power to start programs, but there are some projects the soft-spoken Dion would like to see carried out.
