JAY BECKER (Top record-holder in Mesters' Individuel Championship Play) QuIZ You are the dealer, neither side vulnerable. What would you bid with each of the following five hands? O98 HKQM & $9\ #0160 ehan 3 1, One club. Obviously, the choice lies between a spade and a club, but, in the long run, the . winning. bid is one club. This is chiefly because the opening club bid permits the maximum ex- change of information at a low level. Thus, if you open with a club and partner responds a diamond or a heart, it becomes possible to show the second suit at the one level. But if you open with a spade and partner responds two diamonds or hearts, it would become necessary to go into the three level to show the second suit. This conservation of bidding space is frequently important in arriving at the best contract, whether at a high or low level. 2. One diamond. Even though this is clearly a notrump type of hand, it is better to open with a diamond, our only four-card suit. It would be wrong to bid one notrump, showing 16 to 18 points when we actually have 20, and it would be equally wrong to bid two notrump, showing 22 to 24 points, which we don't have. The plan is to jump to three notrump if partner's response to the diamond opening is a heart, a spade, or a notrump. In this way our high-card strength and balanced distribution would be- come identified almost exactly. 3. One spade, Despite the poor quality of the suit, the proper opening bid is one spade. If partner has any three spades, the suit becomes playable as trump, The intention is to bid hearts next and then abide by partner's preference for one of the two suits. The hand lends itself primarily to suit play, and every effort should be expended in that direction. 4. One club. The choice is be- tween one club and one heart. The club bid is preferred be- cause no rebid problem will arise if partner's response is one of any suit. An opening heart bid would, however, pre- sent a difficult rebid problem, if partner re: two dia- monds. 5. One diamond. bh agg with 4-4-4-1 ,|start with the suit immediately" beneath the singleton, but in this case you don't because the suit, hearts, is not regarded as biddable because of its very poor texture. That being the case, you go to the next eligible suit, diamonds. The intention is - measute 29. Legislative body 30. Appendage of a' lobster 32, Round-ups sun god 45.
