EXHAUSTION FOR EVERYONE Record Parliament Sitting Saved In 11 Million Words By MICHAEL GILLAN OTTAWA (CP)--The record- long parliamentary session which lasted 248 days fatigued not only members of Parlia- ment but the shorthand report- ers who record every word, Between Feb. 18, 1964, and 2:10 a.m. last Saturday, the 11 Hansard reporters took down more than 11,000,000 words in the Commons. The previous record is be- lieved to be during the 1960-61 session of the 24th Parliament in which about 9,000,000 words were spoken between Nov. 16, 1960, and Sept. 28, 1961. Hansard officials also note that the use of the French lan- guage is increasing. At present about 15 per cent) of all the words spoken by MPs are in the French language and are taken down by four French- language shorthand reporters. The amount of French has al- most tripled during the last eight years, particularly since the simultaneous interpretation system was installed in the Commons. 2 The English section of Han- sard has seven reporters and two editors, the same numbers as 40 years ago, says W. W. Buskard, chief of the section. Mr. Buskard, who hopes the staff will be increased soon, said the longer sessions have put such a strain on the staff that serious difficulties are caused if one reporter is ill for a day.
