New Spring Styles Develop Feminine, Ladylike Look In the world of sports the} terms "Press and stretch" are! usually associated with weight- lifters. However, in the field of men's wear they relate to the newest advancements in the construction of clothing, fur- nishings and sportswear. Permanent press applied to suit trousers, slacks and rain- wear needs little, if any, explan- ation of its advantages. The latest of the permanent press processes is baked into the gar- ment after it has been tailored. It is said to be impervious to washing and dry cleaning and will even defeat the heaviest summer deluge. No need for unkempt, wrinkled pants or rain- coats from this time on. Stretch, introduced a year ago, has made rapid strides both in usage and acceptance. Its most recent use has been in dress shirts where the ex- pandable yarns give for extra collar comfort and also provide an expansion plus to the popu- lar tapered shirt bodies. Stretch also scores strongly in summer slacks. Here it offers ithe wanted trim look with add- ed freedom of action. Stretch raincoats have a double value. First is the no-bind elasticity of the coat, second is the fabric itself. The fabrics are woven at their greatest expanse, then al- lowed to contract to their nor- mal width. This gives them a dense, highly compacted con- struction that, aided by water repellent treatments, helps in shedding the heaviest rains. So, stretch seems to have brought the answer to comfort with the pressed look. Leggy Look Is "In" Now Free-wheeling Feet Also With the leggy look "in" for spring, the teen-ager's fashion pone shifts to her free-wheel- eet. e leggy look stems natur- ally from the combined effect of textured stockings, higher hemlines and low-cut shoes, reports Shoe Fashion Service. With the coltish co-ed -- in the prime of her '"'egginess"" -- this emphasis on legs and feet has put her choice of footwear into the | fashion) spotlight. | Her brilliantly colored, light-| as-air leather pumps, sandals and flats reflect the femininity and delicacy of women's shoe styling, yet have a joie-de vivre that is completely her own. Teen-age fashionables are showing more foot as well as| more leg during this spring) semester. At class and after- wards, zingy sling-backs and opened-up pumps with low) heels are being worn in a wide wonderful range of leathers -- smooth, grained, suede, brushed, patent, waxy and embossed. Many sport triangular or lattice-work cutouts at the side, the better to show off pretty patterned stockings With its topline sheared for a shallower silhouette, the clas- sic leather 'pump makes a dreamy informal date shoe, with or without the addition of graceful buckle or bow Strictly casual are T-strap flatties in. grained or brushed leather, waxy and glove leather moccasins, and leather monk- strap slipons. Tidy tieshoes in colorful brushed and grained feather-light on the feet and often touched with detailing -- tassel trim, con- trasting cuffs, tabs with gold buckles. leather slings and. pumps. Fashioned lady-like stripping sandals, from smooth and lustre leath- ers, sleek suede, mirror-like patents and exciting embossed leathers that duplicate reptile skins, these beauties are set on slim mid and low-heels. The teen-age rage for color gets full play this spring. She can be tickled by pink, pop- corn or pistachio -- yellow, turquoise or navy -- by her new leather shoes, Clear sunny shades, off-heat pastels, neutrals and the "nat- ural leathers" colors are avail- able in a full assortment of styles and leather textures Starting with the theory that individua'ity is the essence of good e and good fashion, new. spring styles develop the soft, femiaine, ladylike look. in a diversity of pretty ways, Sil- news centres around slim, gentle rigs lows and glorifies feminine form without tightly 'fitting' it. The skimmy shape, the now-classic A-line, the lively skirt, the 'eminine touch of ruf- fles and bows -- they've all been seen before, and they're seen again for spring '65. SUMMING UP Yet, spring fashion sums up tried and true ideas so deftly and deligatfully that the total result is very fresh, very new- looking indeed -- new in sophis- ticated simplicity, new in youth- ful verve new in excellence of fabric and tailoring, in every price range, and new in the many variations on the theme of the well-bred, ladylike look -- variations calculated to please |the persoval tastes of every lwoman, yet related to the pre- |vailing mood of fashion. | | This mood is reflected in tops) |bloused and beautiful; skirts on the move in pleats, flares or gathers; in ruffles, bows and flounces, handled with discre- tion; in ease everywhere. For further individuality, spring fasnion offers a counter- trend to the softly feminine styles. Dubbed "tough chic", this trend ic somewhat sportive in inspiration, with emphasis on a lean, spare, elegantly unclut- tered look News to note for spring in- cludes: shorter, fuller skirts in both suits and dresses; the re tume look of the dress with jacket or coat, and the equally important look of the "sep- arate" dress, returning to fash- ion prominence; tunic dresses and suits; the cape coat and the wrap coai, slim coats, often flaring toward the hemline, in both single and double-breasted versions; knits ever on the in- crease.
