EASTER THE EASTER PARADE is little more than a week off and time for singer Sheila MacRae to select her bon- net for the promenade. MYERS, PhD The "'New Math" seems to be sweeping the nation. Its purpose is to help children think and reason as they do work with numbers. Whereas it began chiefly in junior and senior high school, it now is in the elemen- tary grades, even the primary grades. ae The 'New Math" has a new vocabulary and many new sym- bols. These are so new that most parents are puzzled with them; many teachers also are. Incidentally you and I have heard and read from some teachers that one of the virtues of the 'New Math" is that, as| most parents can't understand it, they won't try to help their children with homework in) arithmetic. | FURTHER TESTS I refer to those teachers who, | alas, suppose that parents never) should help their children learn) any schoolwork at home. Some teachers seem to get amazingly good results teaching this "New Math,"' even in the early grades. Children who catch on quickly seem to have THE STARS SAY By ESTRELLITA FOR TOMORROW Guard against carelessness in business and financial matters. Be esecially careful where de- tails are concerned. Will the average jchild, by the third or fourth grade, be able to figure out his allowance or handle his money? REASONING OUT To these mothers I reply, per- sonally, about in this way: As I point out in an earlier article, it is reasonable to suppose that teachers emphasizing the new method in arithmetic are so absorbed in it, so eager to help children 'reason out' things, that they may neglect having them learn by heart the few basic number combinations in addition, subtraction, multiplica-| ~ tion until it is unduly late, However, as nearly as I can figure out from talking with some of the leaders in this movement and studying their articles and textbooks there is, as a rule, no objection to hav- ing children memorize these combinations by and by. But the assumption seems to be that children will just remember them incidentally after "reason- ing them out." Her blond husband decided that the fair - haired twin was his but that the black- haired twin was fathered by someone else. The distraught woman pleaded with you to tell her hus- band it is not possible for twins to have different fathers. She said she had searched in the library for proof of her inno- cence but was unable to under- stand the medical language. You said it was indeed pos- sible for twins to be fathered by separate males, but that such occurrences were extra- ordinarily rare. After having said it was possible I'm sure your suggestion that her hus- band "'shut his foolish mouth" meant nothing. I would like to caution you against making statements which have no basis in fact. There is no scientific evidence that a woman who is pregnant can be impregnated. When it comes to matters involving a field about which you know nothing, Ann Landers, why don't you shut your foolish mouth?--Richmond, Va. M.D. Dear M.D. from Va.: Thank you for your letter, If I at- tempted to rely on my own knowledge for the replies which appear in this column I would not have been writing for nearly ten years. I am in touch with experts in many fields and these experts are inordinately generous in providing me with information. You are wrong when you say there is no scientific evidence that a woman who is pregnant can be impregnated a second time. One woman in the club always serves milk in- stead of cream with the coffee. Several of us have discussed this and we think it is pretty cheap.
