: THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thuradey, Apefl 15, 1965 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR "Everything From Soup To Nuts' END OF THE LINE comes tonight, in Detroit Olympia, - for either the hometown Red Wings or the visiting Chicago Black Hawks. This seventh and deciding game of their semi- final set looms as a real doozer, It could be that Hawks will upset the dope bucket. Said dope bucket reads that so far, in all the semi-final Stanley Cup games played this season, | the "home team" has won every time out -- except on Tues- day night in Toronto, when Canadiens won out in overtime over Maple Leafs, to close out that series. Red Wings are } recognized as a truly formidable club on their home ice but | Chihawks haven't looked that bad, even in defeat, at Detroit, * and with just a break or two, could have won one or two there. Tonight, they have to win in Detroit, or else! Key factor, at this distance, would seem to be the health of the 'respective teams. Red Wings are hurting!. It's still bery doubtful whether or not Doug Barkley will be ready for action and with Warren Godfrey playing real well, coach Sid Abel is liable to stay with his current line-up. Several other mem- «bers of the Detroit team have injuries which are hampering ' the individuals concerned. This final seventh game will be a : test of condition and determination -- and in these fields, both clubs have some top exponents. We personally are predicting * that both Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay, yes, and Bill Gadsby, 'three of the Detroit veterans, will be in the star ranks: to- * night -- if trying - to - win means anything in rating stars. a eee +e TORONTO LEAFS are too old! Sure, everybody has been predicting that the Mapleos couldn't go along much Jonger with such a heavy list of veterans on their roster but they won the Stanley Cup for three years in succession. Now "everybody has joined the hue and cry -- especially some of the 4Toronto scribes. We wish some of .them would remember to point out that these veterans are the same players who filled 'Maple Leaf Gardens, to sellout capacity, practically every Saturday night this past winter. It's certain that some of the "oldies will have to be replaced -- "Red" Kelly, deep in the 'political whirl, will likely leave one opening, by personal 'choice. But the real truth is that Toronto Leafs have just "that many veterans that they don't dare let them all depart-- Jor they'd be minus that commodity 'so vital to any profes- 'sional team's operation -- experience! If you take the long, fhard look at the Leafs' lineup, you have to admit that neither of their goalies is at the front side of his career; Douglas is "the only defenseman who can be considered "young"'; up on 'the firing line, they've got Armstrong, Kelly, Stewart, Moore, 'McKenny and Bathgate, all at the border line -- and for that matter, their greatest competitor, Bob Pulford, is also past Ghis peak. They don't dare drop them all and no doubt, one ter two they let go, will probably star again in Boston or New "York. * © S8PORTS SHORTS: -- Coach "Toe" Blake's big problem at "the moment is to decide on the best available fill-in for his in- ured defense ace, Jacques Laperriere, out for the term, with 'm broken ankle. Jean-Guy Talbot is expected to be his choice, 'with rookie Noel Picard as his fifth rearguard. And Jean 'Beliveau wouldn't make a bad rearguard, for the odd shift, either! ... SIR STANLEY MATTHEWS is going to continue 'be play soccer, even though now past 50. He'll be with Toronto City again this year in the Canadian pro loop. . . . GEORGE MCHUVALO and his opponent, Bill Nielsen of Omaha, had their "weigh-in and physicals yesterday and were okayed as in top Bhape, for their heavyweight bout on Monday night. . .
