On Goodyear Negotiations for renewal of a contract between the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company of| Canada at Bowmanville and Lo- cal 189, United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum and Plastic Workers of America, continued today with a conciliation board hear- ing in Toronto. H. G. MacNeill, Goodyear's Industrial products division gen- eral manager in Bowmanville, said that the issues in dispute went before the second meeting of the board today. The 500- member local voted Feb. .28 to strike to back up contract de- mands -- but may not legally do go until seven days after the conciliation board report is handed down. Litter Problem To Be Discussed WHITBY (Staff)--~Taking im- mediate action on complaints of litter 'blowing around the Blair Park Shopping Plaza, town council agreed to discuss the prolbem with plaza merchants. The meeting will be held at the plaza May 6, at 7 p.m. Councillor Tom Edwards stated Bylaw Enforcement Offi- cer Sid Correll had approached one merchant and nothing had been achieved. Complaints had loose over private properties on Lupin Drive. Centennial Year For Carding Mill BRIDGEWATER, N.S. (CP)-- A wool - carding mill in this South Shore town is still in busi- ness after more than 100 years of continuous operation. The trade is just a sideline now for owner Vernon Wile, whose grandfather built the mill in 1860 and managed it until his death in 1911. But Mr. Wile still works evenings carding wool for anyone who brings it in. He uses the original machines run by water power and says the equipment is in good con- dition. Electric lights are the only modern touch. The carding mill was once an essential part of the town's ag- ricultural economy. Farmers used to bring great bundles up| the LaHave River, and during} aome seasons the mill operated both day and night shifts. In those days there were about 45,000 sheep in Nova Sco- o Today there are about 4,- Flowers Beautify Easter Services BLACKSTOCK (TC) -- Flow- ers placed in St. John's Angli- can Church on Easter Sunday were in memory of William Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smith, Jack Smith, and Mrs. Edna McLaughlin. Several lilies were also loaned by members of the congregation. At the Good Friday evening service in the United Church a quartet composed of Mrs. H. Kyte, Mrs. A. Khan, Glenn Larmer and Ernest Swain sang "Alone." Rev. P. Romeril spoke. On Easter Sunday morning the United Church choir sang the anthem, "Crown Him with Many Crowns." Flowers in the church were placed by the Mc- Laughlin families in memory of their mother, Mrs. Edna McLaughlin. Ten members of the Candace Unit met at the manse. Mrs. Dalton Dorrell conducted the apecial Easter worship. Plan- ning for a panel to be given at the general meeting was held. Members of St. John's WA at- tended the Maundy Service in the church for the devotional part of their meeting™ It is planned to hold a quilting on April 27. A donation is to be sent toward a gift for the re- tiring diocesan president and! friendship worker. Cartwright Twp. Has Surplus BLACKSTOCK (TC) -- The benefit of having a reserve fund to cover contingencies was brought home to members of the Cartwright Township Coun- cil at their April meeting. The auditors reported taxes receivable amount to $40,531.97 which was a small increase. Ex- penditures during the year total- led $185,678.94. Receipts amount- ed tc $178,283.38, leaving an operating deficit of $7,395.56. However, the 1963 surplus on hand was $7,953.67 which leaves a surplus of $558.11. Council voiced appreciation of the service rendered by the vol- unteer fire department and spoke in high terms of its effi- ciency. It was reported the de- partment has a surplus of $1,230.56. The clerk was authorized to make application to the Ontario Municipal Board for approval to issue short-term debentures to finance the addition to the Cen- tral Public 'School. Closing date = construction tenders is April The replacement of the water tank used by the fire depart- ment was left to the committee. The appointment of James Lawrence of Nestleton as build- ing inspector was approved by bylaw.
