The annual Regimental Ball was underway. As the martial air reverberated through the Simcoe st. N. Armories building, out stepped Col. R. S. McLaughlin, honorary Colonel of the regiment, with Mrs, W. C .Paynter (wife of the regiment's Commanding Officer) on his arm. Col. "Sam" and his 'partner led 43 couples around the large drill-floor and past the bandstand on the north wall. The second time around the couples alternated in north- south sweeps and met again to come up the floor four abreast. This was repeated until lines eight-couples wide had formed and swung left to line up in front of the band- stand. Guests and personnel not in uniform gathered be- hind them to watch the eating-of-the leek ceremony. But first, Col, Paynter enticed a former C.O. of the regiment, Morley C, Finley, up on stage with him and this duo delivered a verse of "John Peel." Col, Paynter expressed the regiment's appreciation that Col. McLaughlin was able to attend and the crowd of more than 300 responded with an ovation. Captain Ian McNab, in his last official duty prior to his retirement from the regiment, told guests of the On- tarios' affiliation with the Wélch Regiment. '"'We honor them by wearing the national flower." (Each male guest wore a daffodil.) (It is believed the leek was worn as a badge to di? tinguish the Welsh from their enemy in a 7th century battle with the Saxons. It was worn by Welsh troops at Poitiers (1356) during the 100 Years War with France in the belief the wearer would emerge from battle victorious and unscathed.) While the band played "Men of Harlech,"' the newest subalterns--Lts, Patrick Dooley and Helmut Paddags -- were escorted to the dais by Lance Sergeants D. T. G. Matthews and A. G. Lamb, Dooley and Paddags ate the leek and all four quaffed a steinful. Officers were in "mess kit'? uniform--red jacket and dark pants with a gold stripe--or dress blues for this highlight of the regiment's social season. NCO's and ranks wore dress blues. Both messes and the men's canteen entertained guests during the evening and buffet luncheons were served by all three. traits of Col. McLaughlin, one of which is on display in Oshawa's McLaughlin Pub- lic Library. --Oshawa Times Photos by Joe Serge Colonel of the Ontario Regi- ment and Lt. Col. W. The return of the full-length ball gown was established last night as the ladies in long, slim sheaths of satin and brocade or float- ing silk-chiffon, danced with their red-coated and uni- formed escorts to the lilting ing melodies of Stanley St. John and his orchestra. Entering by way of a car- peted marquee, the gentle- men guests were greeted by two pretty girls, Miss Margo McNab and Miss Pat Fisher, carrying large bas- kets of daffodils. Every gen- tleman. received a daffodil boutonniere and many were also decorated with a lei as an introduction to this year's Hawaiian theme. The entire wall space of the Armouries was draped in blue and the orchestra was ensconced in a setting of tropical flowering plants, foliage and pineapples against an illuminated back- drop of a blue lagoon and bending palm trees. Wide blue and white banners float- ed overhead and numerous clusters of balloons and fancy paper balls lent color- ful accents.
