THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, June 16, 1965 Overconfidence Poses Big Danger To Divers By DENNIS ORCHARD i VANCOUVER (CP) -- A fine line divides safety from danger in competitive and commercial diving, and Phil Nuytten can re- call occasions when he slipped over the line and got himself in trouble. One day in the Columbia | River he was sucked into the water - intake chamber of the Celgar pulp mill. He caught his heels on the edge of the cham- ber, and a partner saved him | ~ from being crushed in the ps. Pithe next day Nuytten's hand jammed in the screen of the © same chamber as he tried to © clear obstructions, He had his knife drawa, ready to cut his own arm off, when, one last wrench brought it free. ' "Ignorance and_ overconfi- dence kill more divers than anything else," says Nuytten, 26, a diver for 13 years and a professional since 1957. The Celgar episodes were founded on ignorance. Seven years ago eliminations for the world spear-fishing champion- ships taught him about over confidence. One breath-holding event de- manded that entrants dive down 50 feet, swim horizontally 25 Fae feet, and return to the surface. BLACKED OUT Nuytten's arch - rival im- proved on the test by swimming the' 25 feet there and 25. feet back. before surfacing. Not to be outdone, Nuytten sought to make the horizontal leg four times, but in the last 25 feet he blacked out, sank like a stone and, in the convul- sions of drawing water into his lungs, covered - himself almost completely in mud. Only his white f k was visible but it was spotted by a rescuer and Nuytten was TOP DIVER--Phil Nuyt- ten, a 26-year-old Vancou- ver diver who has been diving for 13 years and a I since 1957, has ¢ prot By BEN OLAN NEW YORK (AP)--The Na- tional.
