PRETTY PRETEND PEARLS From Richelieu comes this handsome necklace _ that would be an ideal gift for a sweet girl graduate. The necklace is made of bar- oque pearls of black, gray \the and white. It is the popular neck - hugging three-strand style and may be worn to complement both high and low-cut dresses. --By Tracy Adrian CHILD GUIDANCE Teenagers Frequently Revolt Against Adults By GARRY MYERS, PhD A mother describes her teen- age boy was follows: A. Parents--Refusal to listen. Constant argument. Defies all family members. Continual prodding needed to perform minimal ordinary duties. B. Teachers--Jn school will not try. Penmanship deliber- ately sloppy. Deliberately goof- ing off. No program in music (clarinet) lessons. Teacher says real talent wasted. Ignores all teacher's suggestions. C. Clothes--Sloppy. No color sense. Wears same two shirts, refusing all others. 'I let him pick his own clothes." Delights in disapproval of appearance. D. Manners -- 'Manners are corny." "I am growing up." E.. Prefers to be anywhere but home. Very well behaved elsewhere. "How do we cope with all this?" My reply in part: You surely didn't miss many of the usual complaints by. par- ents of teen-agers! They sound familiar and look familiar .in print. Any parent of a normal teen-ager would recognize these descriptive words and many a parent has some or all these traits and types of behavior in his or her own child, sometimes | tee or often. CAUSE HAIR FALL Its their frequency and in- tensity which cause hair to fall or to turn gray. But I can't im- agine any youth who behaves in these ways all the time. You note only one good thing about your child--"Very well behaved elsewhere." And only one good thing about yourself-- "I let him pick his own clothes." Couldn't you think of more good ways and traits of each of you? It's pretty late to hope to change him or yourself sud- denly very much. You can't go back and live over the earlier years with him. But your prob- lems are not hopeless--just dif- ficult. I suppose you expected me to tell you how you might make him over by commands and force. The older the child the less his parents can hope to change him by these meas- ures. A whole book. might not suffice in offering advice. BUILD STRONG POINTS There is always hope if both parents will often sit down to gether and take stock of their resources for guiding the child. Among these will be a few means of control. But the biggest resources will be in finding his strong points and building on them; in dis- covering more ways to improve personal relationships with him and winning his genuine es- ANN LANDERS Dear Ann Landers: I'm a teen-ager who got a boot out of letter from that square mother who complained about the TV commercials. She was afraid the brassiere and girdle and beer ads would give her teen-agers ideas. I'm telling that mother she doesn't need to worry. We never pay any attention to the commercials. In fact, the min- ute a TV commercial begins we go to the bathroom, or run to the kitchen to get a drink of water or something to eat. Teen-agers aren't the only ones who do this. Adults do it also. Just to test if I am right, Vl. bet. if this .mother would) ask her teen-agers the sponsors of their favorite programs they wouldn't be able to tell her.-- VIEWER AGE 17 Dear Viewer: From what I've seen on TV lately you kids are watching the wrong stuff. For the most part, the program- ming is so poor it almost makes tasteless 'commercials look good. Dear Ann Landers: Our son is a sophomore in high school. He has become a serious stu- dent of biology. Several weeks ago they studied the hookworm, the fluke and other parasites. Now our son refuses to eat meat unless it is burned black. He says people get sick and even die from eating under- cooked meat. Both my husband and I have tried to tell him this is not true. Neither of us has ever heard of anyone who got sick or died from eating rare meat. Will you settle this in your column? It is a nuisance to have to cook meat specially for the boy . ASSIST NEEDED Dear Assist: Eating rare meat does not make people sick. Only if the meat is in- fected will it cause illness, Gov- ernment meat inspectors do a fine job of protecting the pub- lic against this hazard. It is best to cook all meat fairly well -- especially pork-- but it does not need to be burned black. Dear Ann Landers: I am not very pretty and have never had many dates. It is horrible for an 18-year-old girl to sit home night after night while all her friends are having fun. Then Paul came along. I was so thrilled to-have a boy friend that I knocked myself out doing eerything I could to keep him interested. Well, I did every- thing all right, and that was my big mistake. He said: "If you were dumb enough to buy my sales pitch it's your tough luck, not mine." Please print my letter as a warning to other girls who may be tempted to make the same mistake. I am so ashamed I can't look in the mirror.-- SMART TOO LATE | Dear Friend: Better to get! smart too late than not at all. Some girls make this same mistake over and over again and they never catch on,.Bury the past and put into practice your new-found wisdom. CONFIDENTIAL TO HADDY NUFF: It is incredible that a physician. would bring your gall- stones to a party as a conversa- tion piece and tell people they were yours. I might do better at-advising you on Six Necessary Steps To Find Opportunities By ROBERTA ROESCH "T'e suddenly realized that if my children are ever going to get to college I have to get on the ball and start earning and saving money as soon as I can," writes an Ohio reader. "But as I've never worked before: I don't know where I'll find my greatest money-making opportunities for the next ten years or so. So I'd like to have your advice." The best thing I can tell this reader--or any one like her-- is to plan a future job hunting your next baby. aa | | Very best wishes. keep trying until she achieved) her goal. However, when she had| to face the fact that mathe-| matics--her greatest liability--| was one thing she would need for success she switched to something else. | opportunity and security poten- campaign on the following five important points. 1. When money is a big con-| sideration, find out what sal-| aries are being offered for spe- cific jobs. You can do this by| watching the ads in daily] papers. As you do it, measure) the salaries you can get against} what you will need. This is, of course, an essential determin-| ing factor in your choice. | 2. -While you're making a| choice, be realistic enough to confine yourself to job fields in which you'll have a reasonably good chance of achieving your aim for the next few years. Ask yourself whether you have the ability, time and talent to achieve the. salary, job security and advancement you want in the fields you're considering. One woman, for example, felt she knew exactly what she wanted to do, so she figured all that was necessary was to tial of job fields that interest | you by observing how other| people are doing in the same line of work you would like to get into. 4. If you're a woman whose! family is still at home, deter- mine what job fields: will har-! monize with your marriage and family responsibilities since there are some types of work that fit in with maintaining a home much better than others. . Learn what specific job op- portunities dre available in par- ticular lines of work by talking to people within the fields and by reading the career informa- tion available in your library. 6. Finally, get the training you need for these jobs since the working world is growing in opportunities for the skilled employee, but getting more narrow every day for the ones who don't know how to do any- thing.
