DRYSDALE LOSES Koufax Limits Mets To One Hit, llth Win By MIKE RATHET Associated Press Sports Writer New York Mets finally caught up with Don Drysdale--and so did Sandy Koufax. But neither the rain nor Mil- waukee Braves could catch up with St. Loiis Cardinals, who overcame the first stall-in of 1965 by playing an ingenious game of surrender. The Mets, handcuffed' by Koufax and Drysdale in 24 con- secutive losses to the Los An- geles pair, rose up in the night- cap of a doubleheader Sunday, chipped away at Drysdale for nine hits and whipped the Na- tional League leaders 3-2. Koufax had played catch-up in the opener as he set the Mets down 2-1 on one hit--Jim Hick- man's fifth-inning homer--tying his pitching partner at 11 vic- tories for the season and 12 in a row over the New Yorkers. The split increased the Dodg-| ers' lead to four games over) the Braves, who lost to St.) Louis 6-4 despite the rain-mak-| ing efforts of Milwaukee mana- ger Bob Bragan. | TRIED TO STALL so would what looked like a cer- tain St. Louis victory. Bragan used three pitchers to face just three batters in an 18- minute war of nerves. But the Cardinals thwarted his stalling ending the inning as Dick Groat and then Lou Brock made only token efforts at base-running and were tagged out on the base paths: Elsewhere, Willie Mays stroked seven hits as San Fran cisco Giants swept a double- header from Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 in 15 innings and 7-3, Phila- delphia Phillies downed Hous- ton Astros 3-2 and 7-1 and Cin- cinnati Reds gained a split by beating Chicago Cubs 9-8 after losing the opener 8-5.
