JAY BECKER Masters' QUIZ Your right - hand opponent deals and bids One Spade, both sides vulnerable. What would you bid now with each of the following five hands? 1, @A7T3 WAS 18742 AGB 2. @Q584 YKO AQS HKQ73/ 3. 6 YAKI872 @KIO hA82| 4. @K5 4 $AQI63 Ace 8. @-- YKQ93 @KQIT 1, Pass. In deciding whether or not to overcall an opening bid by your right-hand opponent, the determining factor is usually the question of safety. In gen- eral, you base the decision not on the number of high-card points you have, but on the num- ber of tricks you can reasonably expect to take if you get doubled. Thus, in this case, while the hand has 13 high-card points and the values for an opening bid, it would be too dangerous to bid two diamonds on such a mangy suit. If the next player were to double, it would not be at all surprising to wind up with a deficit of 800 or 1,100 points. The best thing to do is pass the spade bid and await develop- ments. There is a chance that the bidding will proceed in such a way that it will become safer to compete at a later time, 2. One notrump. This is the best way to identify the hand from the standpoint of both high- card values and distribution. The notrump overcall is very similar to the opening notrump bid. It shows 16 to 18 points, balanced distribution, and well divided strength. It guarantees at least one stopper in the op- ponent's suit. 3. Double. The hand is too strong for an overcall of two hearts, and the best way of rep- resenting our strength is by doubling first and 'bidding the hearts later on. A two heart bid would be proper without the king of diamonds or the ace of clubs, but, having both of them, we have to do more than bid two hearts. The double is also preferred to a jump overcall of three hearts because the hand may play well at a game contract in diamonds or. clubs if partner is short in hearts and has a long minor suit. 4. Two diamonds. Here we have the high-card values for a double, but as a matter of tac- tics it is better to start bidding our suits mow rather than at- tempt to identify the 16 high- card points. A double might re- sult in never being able to show the two-suited nature of the hand. 5. Two spades. The cuebid of the opponent's suit is the strongest form of overcall pos- sible. We should be willing to ~ play this hand for game in any suit partner names in response to the cuebid. Passenger Ship In Cargo Trade HALIFAX (CP) -- Recogniz- ing that lower airline fares are cutting down the number of transatlantic: passengers travel- ling by sea, one British firm has moved into the cargo- carrying business. The Furness Warren Line, after 80 years of carrying pas- sengérs, now will call at any feasible port in the Atlantic provinces for export goods to Britain, Malcolm Thompson, here for two years as represtntative of the .line, said the new freight- ers Nova Scotia and Newfound. land are on the express run linking Boston, Halifax and Liv. erpool, England. He said the freighters Elizabeth Schulte and Juliana Schroeder are on the "outport" service to the Atlan- tic provinces. He cited extensive industrial development as the main rea- son for turning to freight serv- ice. The most impressive devel- opment was the $200,000,000 mining project at Belledune Point, 20 miles north of Bath- urst, N.B., where a year-round port is being built. Steel, chem- icals and fertilizers will be ex- ported from Belledune.
