Ajax Town Coun- cil was requested Monday night to allow the Ontario Hydro first easement along a strip of land leading to the building site on Station rd. Hydro was granted an ease- ment along the strip to place seven hydro poles but the town watermain intersects this strip of land and it also has an ease- ment on the property. The prob- lem arose when the Ontario Hydro filed its easment rights at the registry office prior to the town. Town solicitor W. H. J. Thompson said that the town easement would be subject to the wishes of the prior easement and the town would have to ask for permission from the Hydro if it wished to move its water- mains in the future. On the other hand if Hydro wished to move its lines, the town would be responsible for moving its should be solved by requesting an agreement from Hydro that if the town wished to. move its watermain and subsequently the Hydro poles it would bear the costs; but if Hydro wished to move its poles making it necessary to' move the water- main, Hydro would pay. Rob- inson recommended the. exten- sion regarding the paving of streets and sidewalks because he felt they could be better done next spring. than now. The agreement initially ended on July 21. AJAX (Staff) -- The Ajax Hydro came under fire from several members of the Ajax Town Council Monday night. The volleys came when Coun- cillor Mrs. Mary Reid asked Mayor Harry Smith what had been done about trees cut by the hydro on the property of Frank Tonson, of 3 Hills rd., in. the Southwood subdivision. Mr. Ionson appeared before the last council meeting and told its members that the Ajax Hydro without permission, had cut down eight to 10 trees out- side of its five-foot easement.| Council promised to look into the matter after the last meeting. Mayor Smith said that the trees in question were very close to the five-foot limit and the Hydro report showed that the trees had been cut down on the night of the June 12 storm when trees were whipped against the hydro wires shorting out power in a large area of Ajax. Mr. Ionson said the trees were cut down June 14 without his permission and that he had been in his back yard during the storm when some of his neighbors' trees were being re- moved. PERMISSION SOUGHT Mr. Smith agreed that some trees had been cut June 14 and that the Hydro foreman had jasked as many residents as pos- jsible for permission to cut the trees but Mr. Ionson had not been home during the day so Ajax Hydro Manager Jack Sai- ders had attended his residence in the evening apologizing for the tree cutting at which time he was: ordered off the property. Councillor Reid said that she felt the cutting of 10 trees was trees to begin with. Deputy Reeve John Hall said he agreed with Councillor Reid but said he had visited the prop- erty in question and had observ- ed that the trees did drip quite a bit even in a gentle breeze. Councillor William LeGross said he was not satisfied that Hydro was not giving council all the information it should have and that it was council's business to have the informa- tion where it involved Ajax resi- MEETINGS CANCELLED Council passed a resolution to cancel the regular council meet- ings of July 26 and Aug. 23.
