Information pene ith in a Series ACK RAT SNAKE '(elaphe obsoleta obsoleta The black rat snake, may attain a length of eight feet, is Canada's largest snake. It is commonly called the "pilot" black snake because of @ superstition that it would lead bry snakes to safety in time of danger. This snake is an i mee A attractive creature! It is m erately slender, but is much stouter than the racer, for which it is sometimes mistaken. The belly is sharply angular at the sides. The head is squarish with a flattened snout, The tail - fs short. The scales are smooth and glossy but those on the prone of the back are slightly)' Because of its name, one might think of this as an all black snake and some do ap- pear a solid color. However, the tips of the dorsal scales are edged with a bit of white and the color of the skin be- tween the black scales is yel- lowish or sometimes reddisb; this gives a rather colorful, somewhat blotched appearance to some individuals. The throat and chin are white. The for- ward part of the belly is white or yellowish but gradually be- comes darker with squarish blotches. The black rat snake is found in open woodlands and scrub- by, rough country. It prefers uplands often away from the water, thus in some localities, it is known as the "highland" black snakes. It is a good climber and may be found in trees and shrubs. It feeds : on mice and rats and because of its size, it; can devour a great many. Un- won _ hawkes, owls and predators, snakes can poner their way into narrow holes and trap the rodent in its subterranean home. tremely efficient in controlling rodents and should be protect- sys: Pn Mavens ft Tas erful constrictor and kills its prey in its coils, One is made very aware of this ability when handling these snakes, and needless to say, no matter how tame the spe men might be, it would hardly be suitable as a "neckpiece"'! Constrictor-type snakes, in- cluding the large boa constric- tors of South sigs do not 'crush" their pi the coils are only tightened ' sufficiently to stop life. When encountered in the wilds, the black rat snake might display an irritable dis- position. Like many other rodent-eating snakes, it will vibrate the tail in imitation of a rattler. If molested, it will strike hard, but usually releases its bite quickly; the experience is more frightening than dam- aging, Its bite can draw blood, but of course, it is not venom- ous. The black rat snake lays eggs which may number from six to 24 in a clutch. They are deposited from late June through July in loose earth, sawdust heaps or decaying logs. It is indeed rare for snakes to have any concern for their eggs once they are laid or for the young, however, this snake has been observed to The black rat snake is ex om brood the Ess while they hatch. Young black rat snakes hatch Pn late summer or fall. They are much lighter than- the adults and have a definite mottled appearance.
