THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, July 2, 1965 25 BRIDGE By B. What would you bid now with each of the following . five hands: é 1. Three spades. A spade slam is distinctly possible and we~ should encourage partner to in- vestigate it by jumping to three . spades. This is not. the bid we © would make if there were no part score -- in that case, the response would be two hearts-- but we dare not bid two hearts with a part score of 40, since ' . y partner might pass, a game IECTIVE OF CAMBRAI S| Hi contract having been reached. . Partner is permitted to pass three spades; all we are doing by overbidding the score is sug- gesting a slam if the opening bid is better than minimum. It must be borne in mind, when a side has a part score, that the meanings of certain bids change --so much so, that forcing bids frequently become non-forcing, while non - forcing bids some- times become forcing. 2. Three notrump. This is just about right with the part-score situation. Ordinarily, you would have only 16 or 17 points for a jump to three notrump, but with the 40 part score, the range is 17 or 18. 3. Three clubs. This response, being a jump-shift, is unconci- tionally forcing. The intention is . to carry on to a slam with this 19-point hand, even if, partner keeps signing off, but what the final contract will eventually be is at this point uncertain, 4. Two spades. Obviously, this bid could not be made without the part score, but with it, no other call can seriously be cone sidered. Thus, it would be wrong to respond two hearts, which is not forcing and tends to deny spade support. Also, a jump to three spades does not quite make the grade, since there should be little interest in a slam unless partner is able to bid vol ily oyer two spales. 5. Two diamonds. This re-. sponse is forcing, a game con- tract not yet having been reach- ed. The intention fs to make a slam try later, depending. on partner's rebid. Thus if his rev bid is two hearts or two spades, we plan to bid three spades, which is invitational to a slam, though. not, of course, forcing. It is a fact that the smooth exchange of information is sometimes hampered by the presence of a part score, but most of the time part-score bid- ding follows logical and uncom. plicated lines, END UP LIKE MINE DID.,. Yesterday we described PKU (phenyiketonuria), a disease which relentlessly turns other- wise normal babies into men- tally retarded ones, unless it is discovered early and a special diet is adopted. | How do you know when aj baby has PKU? For one thing, the urine has a musty smell. But how do you know just what I mean by that? You don't! And) I can't describe it any better) than that, However, there is a very sim- ple test which will show when| phenylalanine is appearing in| the urine, which is a test for the disease. A drop of 10-per-) cent iron chloride on a wet dia-; per taken from the child will] turn blue. | An easy, inexpensive test! But when it means the differ- ence between having a normal child and a retarded one which may have to spend all the rest} of its life in an institution, there| is no excuse for not testing every baby. There are some aspects which should--I think must--be under- stood, however. In some areas it is now mandatory, under state law, to test every newborn baby for PKU. Generally the rule is to test the babies when three days old. WON'T ALWAYS SHOW The trouble is, the condition does not always show up quite that soon. The premature baby, the baby who must be arti- ficially fed, or. given limited feedings, or even the baby who, for some reason, just doesn't want to eat at first, will not get enough protein, and hence not enough phenylaline, to show up in the test. Thus it is important that test- ing also be done later. The ideal, and I rely on specialists to whom I have talked' would be to have the first test before the baby leaves the hospital, and repeat tests at two weeks, |PKU, It will detect some cases six Weeks and two months. That way we probably would detect every case, and detect it in plenty of time. Indeed, if we found every case when the baby was no more than three to six months old, and then started the special diet, we would prevent all, or nearly all, of the brain damage from PKU. True, there is a blood test for before the economical urine test will, simply because there is a little lag at the beginning. The phenylalanine will build up first in the blood, and a bit later will "spill over" into the kidneys and the urine. The blood test costs several dollars. } Wheh you remember that| I wish I had an easy answer for legislatots_in_ various states what progress we make." who are wrestling with what kind of law, if any, they should pass. But the ideal answer is not a law, but a universal un- derstanding that one two or three of the very inexpensive tests, properly timed, will do what needs to be done. Two more remarks and I'm finished, First, we now have records of} cases of children who are| grossly retarded from this by the time they are a year old. Second, blonde, blue - eyed babies are most frequently the victims. Others may be, but not} very often. | NOTE TO MRS. J.
