For the SPORTS FROM BRITAIN Accusing Finger Pointed At Derbyshire Cricketer By JIM CONWAY LONDON (CP) -- Derbyshire cricketer Harold Rhodes has been sidelined on the grounds that he throws the ball instead of bowling it--an action that is just not cricket. Rhodes, a fast bowler, is sus- pected of infringing rule 26 of the cricket laws. Under this- rule, the ball must be bowled--that is, with the arm straight--and it must be released smoothly, not thrown or jerked. Strictly speaking, a bowler can keep his arm bent providing he does not straighten it just at the moment he lets the ball go. It's this point which marks a thrower, say the critics, and it's the hair-line division which makes it so difficult for the um- pire to judge whether the de- livery is legal. 2 The 28-year-old Rhodes was first called by an umpire for seem to upset any of the um- pires who judged the hundreds of balls he delivered. CONTROVERSY REVIVED: But then a number of curious troversy to the surface once 'more. The South Africans sent a team to England this. summer for the first time since 1960 and one. of their games was against Derbyshire.. Rhodes was the Derby fast bowler and one of the umpires was Sid Buller. The other umpire, Jack Crapp, gave Rhodes a close scrutiny during the first day's play and seemed satisfied. But on the second day Buller showed greater interest and watched Rhodes' delivery from several angles. Rhodes sent the next ball down anxiously and Buller sig- nalled a '"'no-ball" -- a call against illegal bowling. : under (31.2); "Don Fleischman, Buffalo, in the 200-yard individual med- ley for boys 10 years and un- der (2:56.8); --Dianne Set Five New Swim Records ST.
