WARDEN AND MRS. J. J. GIBSON _ Full Family Membership At 'Peoples Boat Club' | "A working man's yacht club" sounds like a contradiction of the terms, but that is what they have in Port Perry. Founded in 1938, Port Perry Yacht Club conducts its opera- 'tions s6 that a membership is well within the means of the average working man. Although most members own boats, the elub does not require its mem- bers to be boat owners. The club operates at capacity Pwith 50 member families and since its foundation has always encouraged family membership. For a rather small club, PPYC boasts memberships from all parts of Ontario. When the club first started, most of the boats were sail- boats. These have been gradual- ly giving way to outboards and these are now largely being re- placed by family cruisers. How- ever, this year, more sailboats may be seen moored at PPYC docks again. Another type of boat becoming quite pepular around the yacht elub mooring area is the oui- board powered family house- boat: These not only do the fam- ily for a cruise, but they are used for just what they. are called -- houseboats. Many fam- ilies spent their summer months aboard ship in the PP- YC area. Activities around Port Perry Yacht Club include. social eve- nings and dances -in the club- house which was built adjacent to the elub docks in 1947. Holi- day cruises through the Trent Waterways system account for a great deal of membership pleasure. Member work days account largely for the inexpensive oper- ation of the club. Ground and building - maintenance and the putting out of docks in the springtime, and 'iaking them back in the late fall is cheer- fully. done usually by a 100 per cent turnout of club members. All 50 members take pride in their club and in the appear- ance of their clubhouse, prop- erty and mooring area.
