B THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturdey, July 31, 1965 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR verything From Soup To Nuts' GREEN GAELS will open their first round of the On- tario Lacrosse Association's Junior "a" playoffs, here at 'the Civic Auditorium, 'on Civic Holiday (Monday night) at their usual starting time of 8:30 o'clock. The reason we haven't tried to outline the playoff setup, prior to this, is twofold -- we didn't know how it would work out and even right now, ao of the plan, nor. just which teams will be oppoftents in the opening rounds, Oshawa Green Gaels, having finished in first place, will meet the team that finished in fifth place. There are eight of the nine teams included in the playoff draw, with 1st playing 5th; '¢nd vs 6th; 3rd vs 7th; and 4th vs 8th. The only team not included in the playoffs is the Guelph Mohawks, who won only one game this season. Oshawa's opponents will be Long Branch but that wasn't decided until last night, when they defeated Brampton, in Brampton, 17-11, Brampton won on Thursday night in Guelph, to break a four-way tie for fifth place, that existed earlier in the week. Long Branch, St. Kitts and Toronto Township each had 14 points, prior to last night's action, but St. Kitts moved up to sixth Position, thanks to their big win over Guelph, LONG: BRANCH finished in fifth place last night, and they faced a difficult chore. They not only had to win in Brampton, but win' by more than five goals. That was the margin in goal-scoring enjoyed by the homesters before the game. In cases where teams are tied in total points, their position in the standing (and hence their playoff bracket) is to be decided on the scoring statistics, Added to the complications is the last game of the schedule, tonight, with Toronto Township visiting Hastings, who have 21 points. A win will cinch third place for Hastings, but Etobicoke has 20 points and a "rained-out" game against St. Kitts, which would have to be played, should Hastings lose. It's all very confusing, but it'll all come out in the wash, on Monday morning. Anyway, all the Oshawa lacrosse fans care about is that their Green Gaels are playing at home on Monday night, so they'll be there, with a banner attendance. HARNESS RACING buffs around these parts -- and Osh- awa and district has a large contingent of enthusiasts, espe- cially in the suburban areas, North Oshawa especially, as well as neighboring communities such as Uxbridge, Port Perry, Orono, Blackstock, Bowmanville and Lindsay, get a chance to enjoy their favorite sport, here on Civic Holiday, when the Oshawa Harness Horse Racing Association will present a lengthy card, at Alexandra Park, with the activity getting underway, at two o'clock. The entries iinclude some of the top horses in their class, which have been in com- petition in recent weeks at Mohawk, Garden City and Greenwood Raceways, others at the weekly Saturday-night meet in Peterborough. Others are "tuning up' as the an- nual "Fall Fair" racing season moves into high gear. For By JOHN SHORT EDMONTON (CP) -- Fred Mitchell, former Edmonton al- derman, claims he is just like any average tennis player whose reflexes rust with age. The difference is the average tennis player finds his game de- teriorating at about 35. Mitchell, 71, still plays twice a week. Admittedly, he isn't the player he was in the 1920s when he won the city singles title five times and the Alberta title once, but he was good enough re- cently to reach the semi-finals pionships. His conqueror was a stripling of 26. "T lost 7-5 and 7-5," he said. "But I was pleased because I don't usually play singles in competition any more. I played singles because I couldn't find a doubles partner." Semi-retired managing direc- tor of Halcro Oil Ltd., Mitchie plays an average of twice a week in the summer. During the winter he plays badminton often and bowls regularly in a five-pin league. "These games can be played without too much strain at my age. You haven't body contact and you play on a flat surface." 'KEEPS MIND CLEAR' To him, the benefits are more than physical. 'You can't play a sport--any sport--while you're concentrating on something else. It keeps your mind clear." Mitchell played tennis often until 1962, but his aldermanic duties interfered occasionally. His 24 years of consecutive service is a record for Edmon- ton aldermen. In 1959, he wa: acting mayor for nearly two months after William Hawrelak resigned. "I might have run for mayor at that time," Mitchell said, "but I hadn't been out of hospi- tal long and my wife had just passed away." Born in Stratford, Ont., Dec. 4, 1893, he was married in Ed- monton in 1922. A son and a daughter still live here. i While serving as alderman, | Mitchell also was president of the East Edmonton Conserva-) Tennis Enthusiast, 71, Plays Twice A Week of B section of the city cham- % jumps the net after a game. The Civil Service Softball League completed its schedule this week and will launch their eight-team playoff draw, on Wednesday night. Rundle's with a brilliant undefeated record of 17-straight wins, finished in first place, followed by Quality Fuels, with 11 wins and 6 defeats. A 'new entry, Heffering's, finished in third place with Rexco (Reynolds Extrusion Co.) in fourth spot, Wood's Transport, league- leaders last season, ended up out of the playoffs this season, mainly because their players were more involved (as police- men in 'Civil Service" than in softball). Not a bad excuse either, for any good bunch of competitors -- and the Wood's team certainly qualified in this category. The playoff draw, for the quarter final-rounds, is as fol- lows: Wed, Aug, 4 -- Ontario Steel vs Rundle's Garden Centre, at Lakeview Park (West diamond), 6:30 p.m,; Foley's Plumbing vs Quality Fuels, at Lakeview Park (East diamond), 6:30 p.m.; Scott's Chicken Villa vs Heffering's, at North Osh- awa, 6:30 p.m, and DeHart"s vs Rexco, at North Oshawa, 8:15 p.m, Return games are on Monday, Aug. 9 -- with Ontario Steel vs Rundle's, at Alexandra Park, 6:30 p.m.; Quality Fuels, vs Foley's, at Alexandra Park, 8:15 p.m.; Scott's vs Hefferings, at North Oshawa, 6:30 p.m., and Rexco vs DeHart's, at Thornton's Corners, 6:30 p.m. Third games, in each of these series, are scheduled for Wed.
