"The police would take Ne- groes outside, close the doors) so we couldn't hear, and then beat them," he said here Satur- day. Mr, Wood, a writer and part- time teacher in Toronto, de- was "held by two policemen} while a third punched her in the kidneys with a billy." He is one of four professional divers employed by the Metro- politan Toronto works depart- ment. Their jobs consist mainly of inspecting underwater construc- tion and making routine checks on inflow and outflow pipes of waterfront sewage or water- treatment installations. Does Davidson see any fish, shipwrecks or mysterious bod- ies? "Nothing," he says. 'The odd fish, that's all, Generally it's quite clear and you don't have too much there's nothing to see except the job you're on." The divers put on massive steel helmets fastened to steel- studded collars and heavy rub- ber canvas suits. The suits are equipped with a lead-weighted belt with knife attached and lead - soled shoes. The whole suit, without the diver, weighs nearly 200 pounds Each man 1s connected to an air pump Sbove the surface by |g heavy rubber hose about 150 trouble seeing but) epartment nal Divers feet long. The hose is attached to the top of the diver's helmet and also carries a telephone line so the diver can maintain con tact with the surface. At present Davidson is work- ing a few hundred yards off New Toronto where a construc- tion company is laying under- water pipe for a new $14,000,000 water treatment. plant. Sections of pipe six feet in diameter are laid under water from a crane on a barge. Then giant scoops of gravel are dumped on top. A contractor's diver supervises the work. Da- vidson goes down afterwards to inspect. He considers his job a routine one. "My boy who is 14 wants to be a diver,"' he says, 'I tell him there's lots of much better jobs around than this one,'"' Davidson and his: mates say ing underwater is the failure of the air pump above. If this hap- pened, the divers would prob- ably have enough air in their helmets to reach. the' surface But if the ascent was made from deep water, 30 feet: or more, a fast trip could cause a case of the bends, and Bessie Hortop.
