ednesday, August 4, 1965 White House "Leak" Seen By Ford y JACK BELL WASHINGTON (AP)--Repre- sentative Gerald R. Ford of Michigan said Tuesday he has a _ suspicion that information on a Viet Nam conference between President Johnson and congres- sional leaders last week "was leaked from the White House." The House Republican leader, regarded as the apparent target of Johnson's blast at "a promi- nent member of another party" over the reports, did not elabo- rate, But in a television inter- view he did deny anew that he was the source of the contro- versial accounts. At issue, in particular, was a published report that a memor- _THE OSHAWA TIMES, | andum ~y at the White House 7 D atic leader Mike Mansfield of Mon tana influenced Johnson's deci- sion not to call up National Guard and reserve units. John- son said that was untrue and took the view that the leak was in "perhaps malicious" form. "I broke no confidence," Ford asserted, He added that he has a suspi- ~dion that Johnson "is very, very sensitive' because some promi- nent Senate Democrats have been critical of his policies in Viet Nam. DIDN'T MENTION IT Ford said he did not refer to the Mansfield statement or ce- serve plans in an informal back- ground briefing with reporters after the White House meeting That part of his comment's'. today was about the same thing he had said Monday. Ford denied mentioning the July 26 White House briefing at a background chat with report- ers. He issued a let's-get-on- with - the - work statement in which, however, he did contend that the main opposition to Johnson's military deci- sions comes from congressional Democrats, especially in the Senate. And he said Commu- nist leaders would be happy to see a. name-calilnng contest de-| velop in the U.S. The White House refused any) further comment. Whether it was a case of mis- taken identity remains unclear, but Johnson used a presiden-| tial press conference to blast a prominent Republican Sunday. | The president charged this! Republican with leaking "per- haps malicious" reports, Because the president said "an inexperienced man, or a new one" once in a while might) break confidence after a White) House briefing, several news-| papers concluded he was point-| ing at Ford, who became House | Republican leader this year. Ford told a press conference Monday he wasn't going to be) "baited into a verbal donny.| brook" with the president. He| said that to do so "'would play) into the hands of Hanoi, Pel-| ping and Moscow." Dean Rusk Silent On JFK Story | WASHINGTON (AP) -- State Secretary Dean Rusk won't dis-| cuss reports that the late pres-| ident John F. Kennedy had} planned to oust him from the| job. But he has defended his| department's personnel and way of doing things. Rusk had a ahance Monday, at a press conference to com- ment on a report in a maga-) zine article by Arthur M. Schle- singer Jr., historian and White) House assistant to Kennedy.! Schlesinger wrote that Kennedy 'wanted more decision and vigor in the state department and, be- fore his death, planned to re- place Rusk as its head, _ The secretary said he had no comment, now or for the near future. Rusk said he does "'expect to record for the Kennedy and Johnson libraries my own im- pressions of the principal events during the period in which I might serve." But whatever papers he produces, he said, will remain in the files of the state department, or the libraries, until that future year) when the presidential papers of the period are made public. Schlesinger has encountered) some criticism in Congress for| writing as he did about Rusk) while the secretary is in office.) Schlesinger said during the) weekend "I couldn't care less" about this criticism and sug-| gested judgments on his book, | from which the article was ex- cerpted, be made when it is published in full.
